Mangalore: Three dead as truck smashes into auto at Suratkal

Mangalore: They came on summer vacation, but accident snatched away their young lives

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Updated: May 13

Mangalore, May 13: Eleven-year-old Nishmitha and her sister, nine-year-old Manisha had come from Mumbai to Mangalore to enjoy their summer vacation, but not only their vacation, but life itself came to a sudden and tragic end in a ghastly accident at Padre Mukka here on Monday May 12. Their young uncle, Sunil alias Naveen, all of just 24 years, also died in the accident.

The accident occurred when Sunil was taking his elder sister, Savita, and her daughters, Nishmitha and Manisha, to the home of his other elder sister at Mukka Padre. Savita, who normally lives in Mumbai with her hotelier husband, was on a visit to native place. Sunil, who earlier worked with Savita's husband in Mumbai, had shifted to his village six months back, and started working as auto rickshaw driver.

The family of Savita intended to participate in an auspicious function arranged at her elder sister's house at Padre, and visit her in-law's home at Madhya village to take part in the annual festival of Sri Khadgeshwara Khadgeshwari temple in that village on May 13.

Initially the people at the spot thought that there were no passengers in the auto rickshaw. Savita was tossed into the roadside drain due to the force of the accident. The auto rickshaw had got mangled and crushed under the truck, and part of it was buried under the mud.

Onlookers said they heard Nishmitha crying for sometime. Perhaps she died thereafter as the rescue operation took lot of time. The police assisted by locals faced lot of difficulties in bringing the auto rickshaw out with the help of a JCB and bringing out the bodies. As a result, over an hour was spent for this purpose, causing long line of vehicles on the highway.

The accident not only exhibited the hazards caused by the incomplete highway widening work, but also the insensitiveness of road users who caused traffic bottlenecks by parking their vehicles on the road after the accident and recorded the events which unfolded at the spot of the accident in their cell phones.

MLA Mohiuddin Bava visited the residence of the family in Ulaibettu to console the family members. He also visited Savita, who was being treated at Suratkal primary health centre. He summoned national highway authorities and asked them to execute highway widening work on a war footing. The officials explained that road works had been affected because of the election.

Suratkal station house officer, M A Nataraj, sub-inspector, Kumareshan, and other staff got involved with the rescue operation. A case was registered in this connection and investigation was taken up.

This unfortunate, horrible tragedy could have been avoided if the truck has controlled speed according to traffic signs. One can imagine the speed at which the truck was moving. As I know, there are traffic signboards along the highway in Suratkal, indicating speed limits, school zone, drive slow, etc. Unfortunately, these are not being followed by rash drivers. There should be stringent punishments for such unscrupulous drivers. Further, there should be speed breakers on highways passing through towns and urban areas, especially near road crossing points and near exit from highway / entry to the highway.

Very sad . During visits use to reckless driving of road users, for the mere savings of patrols coming on opposition direction in no entry that too in highway and not only risking their own life others too which should be taken into serious.. We should learn to follow the road directions which may reduce such accidents.

Unfortunately we will remember this incident for a week and forget later.

Why not we people of managlore get unite and raise the voice for the proper roads and implementation of Strict Traffic/road rules. We see group of people protesting for hatred speeches and silly issues.
    But not for such issues.

I feel Mangalore city is compartively safer than highways. So Mangalore - Udupi, Mangalore - Kundapur work has to finish ASAP and RTA should also apply proper Highway rules & regulations to avoid such mishap in future.

We had very good chance to catch hold so called our politicians during this election time to put more pressure on them and to complete the job, now once they elect they will forget everything, come on guys we will hold a mass rally and will not stop our agitation till the road work is not completed, else we will have to wait another 2-3 election to complete this highway project. Problem is we United Manglorean not taking things serious.

Really sad to see the smiling faces put to rest and that too no fault of theirs. Rash driving should be equally blamed for such accidents. I am reading such stories since many years still such accidents continue to happen in mangalore. Almost 90% of the accidents involve either the trucks or the privately run buses. Somehow i feel bus services in mangalore should be run by government only (like we have in cities like Mumbai). Competition and rivalry amongst private bus operators lead to such incidents on the roads. Similarly with the onset of development work, SEZ's in the city, there has been lot of heavy vehicle movement in the city. But government body is negligent to control the menace of the rowdy and rash drivers. Simple steps like speed controllers in heavy vehicles can save lot many lives. But is anyone listening :(

Speedways/Highways should not cut through cities. They should be on the outskirts bypassing the main roads and though un-populated areas. We see this system followed in other parts of the state. But in our district, they cut through the city. The speed limit is 80 and is displayed all along the route.Small vehicles which have no other alternative but to use this road are generally the victims. Our people deflect the blame on politicians and the matter is closed. People along the highway are at tremendous risk not only of accidents but also severe pollution which causes severe respiratory problems, allergies and generally decrease of lifespan.
And if there is no alternative, but to cut across a city, then the speed limit should be 40km/hour and with signals at all intersections and also heavy vehicles/trucks should not be allowed to ply from 7am to 7pm.

ITs almost 5 years, countless lives still the project is incomplete due to the inefficiency of administration and some of the influential people delaying to part with their land, which is already marked for the road. Oscar Fernandes local politician who is Road and transport minister is useless. He cannot do something for his native, what we can expect from him otherwise. May God grant Solace to departed family.

Yep bro, you are right, it could be one of the worstly handled projects handled with utter callousness despite numerous ghastly accidents snatching lives of entire families taking place over the years!!

Only drivers who are experienced in this sector can safely drive, any new driver is bound to get puzzled due to numerous diversions and so many vehicles coming in the wrong direction to save time and money putting the life and property at grave risk and no action whatsoever being taken by the Traffic Police!!

Human life has become worse than that of an animal!!
