Mangaluru, Sept 24: Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) commissioner Rahul Ratnam Pandey took civic issues to the streets during the ‘Walk with Commissioner’ programme, inspecting commercial establishments, footpaths, public facilities, parking arrangements and other civic concerns across the city.

During the inspection near Hampankatta, Pandey checked the trade licence of Kamath Hotel and found that the establishment was operating without transferring the trade licence. He directed officials to issue a notice to the hotel owner.

Pandey also inspected the hotel kitchen, where cleanliness issues and leftover food items stored in the refrigerator were noticed. He instructed food safety officials to issue a notice and directed the hotel management to maintain proper hygiene standards.

The commissioner further instructed officials to inspect the trade licences of commercial establishments across the city and ensure that establishments comply with the required regulations.

Footpath encroachments flagged

During the walk, footpath encroachments were noticed at several locations, including Hampankatta, K B Katte, Lady Goschen Road and Car Street. Pandey directed officials to clear the encroachments and ensure that shops and fruit vendors do not occupy pedestrian pathways.

He also inspected the Indira Canteen near State Bank and tasted the food to assess its quality and hygiene. Expressing satisfaction with the food, he said cleanliness was being maintained. He suggested maintaining a register at the canteen to record complaints or issues, enabling officials to monitor and address them.

Parking and traffic issues inspected

The commissioner also inspected parking and traffic-related issues, including designated bus stops and no-parking areas near the Central Market. He directed officials to ensure that vehicles are parked only in designated parking spaces and that traffic-related instructions are properly implemented.

As part of civic improvement measures, officials were also instructed to identify black spots and monitor public areas through the Integrated Command and Control Centre.

Amphitheatre planned at Raraji Park

Meanwhile, Pandey announced plans for an amphitheatre at Raraji Park, where cultural programmes will be organised every Sunday. Various cultural and artistic groups will be given an opportunity to perform at the venue, with the programmes expected to begin within the next 20 days.

The ‘Walk with Commissioner’ initiative was launched by the MCC to directly understand civic issues and take action on them. The programme is held on the 16th of every month, with the commissioner visiting different wards to inspect local issues and interact with the public.
