Mangaluru, Jul 3: A group of students from the department of social work at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, demonstrated exceptional courage, compassion, and presence of mind when they came to the aid of an elderly man who was seriously injured in an unfortunate accident on June 30.
The students were at the city bus stand when heavy rainfall caused a large glass panel from a shop opposite the bus stand to shatter and fall onto an elderly pedestrian walking nearby. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, the students responded immediately without hesitation.

Justin V Joy, Tharun Bomick, Alit Mathew, and Ajay Kiran from the Master of Social Work (MSW) programme, along with Kevin, Vyshak, Frenon, and Spandan from the BA social work, economics and other graduate programmes, quickly rushed to the injured man, ensured his safety, and arranged for his immediate transportation to the nearby KMC Hospital. Their calm, coordinated, and timely intervention enabled the victim to receive emergency medical attention without delay, significantly contributing to his survival.
The students' actions reflected the true spirit of the social work profession—placing humanity above all else and responding with empathy, responsibility, and selfless service in times of crisis. Their willingness to act decisively during an emergency serves as an inspiring example of civic responsibility and demonstrates the values that the University strives to instil in its students.
In recognition of their exemplary humanitarian service, KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, felicitated the students with certificates of appreciation, acknowledging their prompt action and invaluable contribution in saving a life.
