Mangaluru: Special heatstroke ward established at Wenlock Hospital

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, May 7: In view of the rising temperatures in the district, a special 10-bed heatstroke unit has been established on the 5th floor of the new surgical block at Wenlock Hospital.

If symptoms such as increased body temperature, confusion, or loss of consciousness are noticed, people can immediately call 108 for emergency services.

Heatstroke is life-threatening and requires immediate professional medical assistance. The affected person should be moved to a shaded area, an air-conditioned room, or any cool place. Rapid cooling is extremely important. The person should be immersed in ice water or, if possible, placed in a tub of cold water.

Water should be sprayed over the body using a garden hose or by covering the person with towels or sheets soaked in cold water. Ice packs or cold wet cloths should be placed on the armpits, neck, back, and groin area. Fans can be used to help evaporate water from the wet skin. If the person is conscious, cold water or electrolyte drinks should be given. Alcohol or caffeinated beverages should not be provided. Tight or thick clothing should be loosened.

People should drink plenty of fluids such as water, tender coconut water, and ORS throughout the day even if they are not thirsty. Outdoor activities should be limited or avoided between 11 am and 4 pm. Light, loose-fitting, light-coloured cotton clothes should be worn. Time spent in the sun should be increased gradually to help the body adapt to the heat.

Children, elderly persons, and pets should never be left inside parked vehicles, as temperatures can become fatal within minutes. Those working or exercising outdoors should take frequent rest breaks in the shade. Elderly people and those suffering from chronic illnesses should be given special care.

Symptoms of heatstroke include increased body temperature, confusion, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, hot and dry skin or excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, cold or clammy skin, dizziness, fainting, weak pulse, nausea, and related conditions.

Authorities stated that if a person is suffering from heat exhaustion, they should be shifted to a cool place, given water, and allowed to rest so that it does not progress into heatstroke. If someone collapses in the heat with confusion and high fever, Wenlock Hospital should be contacted immediately and cooling measures should be started on the spot.

For more information, the public may contact the helpline numbers 7483035127, 8217662885, 9945927253, and 9167607879, according to a release issued by the Wenlock Hospital superintendent.
