Mapusa traders halt market operations over license and rent issues

Mapusa, Apr 8: Merchants at Mapusa Market observed a shutdown on Wednesday, protesting delays in trade license renewals and unresolved rent payment concerns. The traders also took out a march towards the Mapusa Municipal Council, urging authorities to address their grievances without further delay.

The agitation stems from long-pending issues related to licence renewals and accumulated shop rents, which traders say have disrupted their businesses and created uncertainty.

Amid the protest, the chief officer of the municipal council assured the traders that licence renewals would be processed without requiring immediate rent payment, pending a final decision from the state government.

Following this assurance, the Merchants’ Association decided to temporarily suspend the protest march, while awaiting further clarity from authorities on a long-term resolution.
