Northampton , Jun 15: As the Indian cricket team prepares to embark on its crucial Test series against England, set to begin on June 20, former cricketer and coach WV Raman has voiced serious concerns about the team's batting depth and clarity in selection.

Speaking exclusively to IANS during an interaction hosted by Sony Sports Network, Raman reflected on India’s preparations in the wake of Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket. With the experienced opener stepping down, the spotlight now shifts to KL Rahul, who is expected to play a pivotal role in the top order alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rahul’s recent ton against England Lions for India A has only strengthened the belief that he could anchor the innings in English conditions, known for their challenging swing and seam.

Raman acknowledged Rahul’s flexibility in batting positions and noted his consistent run-scoring ability across formats. However, he urged the Indian think tank to settle the batting order early in the series to avoid unnecessary shuffle and instability. "In a five-match series, the team must arrive at a clear combination quickly, especially with a young and evolving squad," he remarked.

With several fresh faces in the squad, including the in-form B Sai Sudharsan, questions are being raised about the final XI for the opening matches in Leeds and Birmingham. Though Sudharsan has impressed in domestic and county circuits, Raman suggested that his inclusion in the playing XI might still be uncertain, depending on the team management’s strategy.

Adding another layer of complexity, England’s bowling line-up will be without some of its premier pacers, including Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. However, Raman warned that the Indian side cannot afford to take the English attack lightly. He pointed to seasoned names like Chris Woakes and Jamie Overton, and highlighted the effectiveness of Ben Stokes, who has often turned the tide with crucial breakthroughs.

Despite India boasting an array of young talent, Raman was frank in his assessment of the batting unit. He said that the Indian side, while promising, is not entirely solid and that the English bowling—especially under home conditions—could pose stiff challenges. He urged the Indian batters to adapt swiftly and show maturity in the face of pressure.

With the much-anticipated five-match Test series just days away, cricket lovers across the world are eagerly awaiting this fresh chapter in the India-England rivalry. All matches will be televised live on the Sony Sports Network, promising an exciting start to the international red-ball calendar.
