Paris, Jun 6: American tennis star Coco Gauff ended France’s sensational dream at Roland Garros on Thursday, defeating local wildcard Lois Boisson 6-1, 6-2 in a commanding semi-final display to book her place in the French Open final. Gauff will now face world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a much-anticipated title clash.
Gauff, 21, who won her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open, is chasing her second major crown. The last time she reached the French Open final was in 2022, where she fell to Poland's Iga Swiatek. But this time, the American looks in imperious form.
“It’s never easy playing against a home favourite, especially with such an electric crowd,” said Gauff post-match. “Lois has had an amazing tournament. I’m happy to be in the final, but I know there’s still one more step to go.”
For 22-year-old Lois Boisson, ranked world number 361, the semi-final marked the end of a fairy-tale run. The Frenchwoman stunned the tennis world with shock victories over top-10 players Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva, en route to her first-ever Grand Slam semi-final – an incredible achievement considering she had just one WTA tour-level win before the tournament.
Playing under the closed roof of Court Philippe Chatrier as rain lashed outside, Gauff wasted no time asserting dominance, racing to a 4-0 lead in the first set. Despite massive crowd support and a brief spark from Boisson, the American kept her composure, closing out the opening set with authority.
Boisson, cheered on by a passionate home crowd hoping to witness a first French finalist since Mary Pierce in 2000, had her moments but was unable to match Gauff’s consistency and power. The second set saw Boisson earn a break but fail to build momentum, as Gauff broke five times in the match to seal a straight-sets win.
Despite the loss, Boisson left the court to a standing ovation, having captured French hearts with her grit, determination, and stunning upsets throughout the tournament.
The final showdown between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka promises fireworks as two of the game’s biggest hitters prepare to battle for the 2025 French Open title.
