Melbourne, Jun 2: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) on Monday, aiming to concentrate on the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. The 36-year-old said he did not want to continue playing ODIs “for selfish reasons,” as his body struggled to cope with the physical demands.
Maxwell, known for his explosive batting and handy off-spin, featured in 149 ODIs for Australia. His most iconic innings came at the 2023 World Cup against Afghanistan, where he scored a breathtaking 201 off 128 balls despite battling severe cramps in scorching heat. That innings helped Australia snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and eventually win the World Cup, defeating favourites India in Ahmedabad.
Reflecting on his decision, Maxwell said on the 'Final Word Podcast' that he had a frank conversation with Cricket Australia’s Chair of Selectors George Bailey about his future. “I don’t think I am going to make the 2027 World Cup,” he said, acknowledging it was time for younger players to stake their claim.
Maxwell, who recently returned from an IPL stint with Punjab Kings cut short by a broken finger, added, “I didn’t want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons.”
With a career strike rate of 126—the second highest in ODI history behind Andre Russell—Maxwell boasts four centuries, 23 half-centuries, and 77 wickets. Cricket Australia said he will now prioritise the 2026 T20 World Cup, the Big Bash League, and other global commitments.
Maxwell’s retirement follows fellow Aussie Marcus Stoinis, who quit ODIs earlier this year. CA Chief Executive Todd Greenberg praised Maxwell’s “ballistic batting” and pivotal role in Australia’s success, while George Bailey called him “one of the one-day game’s most dynamic players” who still has much to offer in T20 cricket.
As Maxwell steps away from the 50-over format, fans look forward to his impact in the shorter format and the next T20 World Cup.
