Beltangady, May 14: The final rites of Kalyani (96), a resident of Kooluru in Mundaje village and wife of the late Kunjiraman Nair, were held on May 13 at the Rudrabhoomi in Mundaje. Kalyani had passed away on May 12 in a tragic incident where she and her son had consumed an excessive amount of sleeping pills.

A case regarding the incident has been registered at Dharmasthala police station. Following the post-mortem conducted at Beltangady Government Hospital, her body was handed over to the family for the funeral.

Her son, Jayaram K, a fine arts teacher and a state-level artist, remains in critical condition. His health has further deteriorated, and he is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of Wenlock District Government Hospital in Mangaluru. Reports state that he is on artificial respiratory support and his condition is said to be serious.

On the night of May 9, mother and son reportedly consumed an excessive amount of sleeping pills at their home due to financial difficulties and health issues that had left them disheartened. On May 10, neighbours and relatives admitted them to a private hospital in Ujire.

The deceased Kalyani is survived by four sons, two of whom had already passed away.
