Chengdu, May 4: China reaffirmed its dominance in world badminton by clinching the 2025 Sudirman Cup title with a 3-1 win over South Korea in a thrilling final held here on Sunday.

This victory marks China's 14th title in the biennial mixed team world championship, continuing a legacy that began after the tournament's inception in 1989. South Korea, a formidable rival, has won the prestigious event four times.

The tie began with a gripping mixed doubles clash where China's Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping edged out South Korea’s Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung. After taking the first game 21-16, the Chinese duo dropped the second 17-21 but bounced back to claim the decider 21-15.

Reflecting on their performance, Feng said, “I think I performed perfectly and Huang is still passionate.” Huang, in turn, praised her partner as “perfect,” adding, “he grows a lot and deals with some deciding points very reasonably.”

South Korea levelled the contest in the women’s singles, where World No. 1 An Se-young defeated China’s Wang Zhiyi 21-17, 21-16. “I had mixed feelings with nervousness and excitement because this is my first Sudirman Cup final,” Wang admitted.

China regained the lead in the men’s singles as Shi Yuqi dominated Jeon Hyeok-jin 21-5, 21-5. “My condition is getting better game by game,” Shi noted, saying he gave it his all despite his opponent’s lower ranking.

The decisive victory came in the women’s doubles, where Olympic silver medallists Tan Ning and Liu Shengshu overpowered world No. 3 Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee 21-14, 21-17, securing China’s championship win.

The win adds another chapter to China’s legacy in the Sudirman Cup, underlining its continued supremacy in the global badminton arena.
