Dubai: Clarence Kaikamba chosen for Daiji Literary Award

Media Release

Dubai, Dec 4: Famous Konkani writer Clarence Kaikamba has been chosen for the Daiji Dubai Award of this year initiated by Daiji Writers’ Forum.

This was announced during Daiji Writers’ Forum general body meeting held at Winny's Restaurant, here recently.

Earlier Daiji Writers’ Forum had invited entries from the Konkani literary world for its prestigious award. After scrutinizing many number of entries, the selection committee announced the name of Clarence for this year’s award. The award selection process was held under the supervision of Walter Nandalike and in the presence of Dayan D’Souza, founder president, Daiji Writers’ Forum along with members.

Clarence Donald Pinto, known as Clarence Kaikamba was born at Kaikamba in Gurpur parish near Mangaluru. He relocated to Oman in 1994. He is married to Jane Ida and the couple is blessed with two children Alistair and Amanda.

Clarence was the honorary editor 'Special Muscat Issue' of 'Jhelo' in the years 1999, 2000 and 2001. He was appointed as the honorary editor of 'Kannik Special Muscat Issue' in the year 2002. He also rendered his service as honorary editor of 'Expressions News Letter of Toast Masters International' in the year 2003-04. 'Kathamruth' (2002), 'Tinter'( 2003-05) are his columns which have been published in daijiworld.com and maibhaas.com.

Clarence is an active Konkani writer. He has written 5 novels, over 300 short stories, over 50 poems and number of articles so far.  ‘Sutka’ and ‘Kathamruth’ are his short story collections.  Clarence Pinto, Kaikamba was honoured by Goa Konkani Bhasha Mandal in 1986.

The service rendered by Clarence, who is residing in a foreign land, to the culture and literature of Konkani is commendable. He is also a model for Konkani community in gulf countries.

The highly prominent 'Daiji Dubai Literary Puraskar' will be presented to Clarence during the Forum’s annual day, along with Rs 75,000, a citation and certificate of honour.

Daiji Writers’ Forum, also known Daiji Dubai, is a forum of active Konkani writers based in Dubai providing yeoman service to Konkani language and literature for the last nineteen years.

A well deserved selection for the award. Although he has contributed to konkani literature in many ways, many would agree with me as he is known for his short stories. It always leaves a void space and make you think a lot when you finish reading his story.

change in the society and how it has individually reflected among the people has been shown in the characters of his stories. I wish he continues the good work and touch more and more social issues in his literary works; both as creative literature and any articles reflecting the social issues in the coming years.
