Bengaluru among 11 world cities which may likely run out of drinking water

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Feb 12: Bengaluru has been featured among the 11 cities across the world by BBC, which is likely to run out of drinking water.

Experts who were studying the drinking water crisis in Cape Town said that the plight of the drought-hit South African city is just one extreme example of a problem that experts have long been warning about - water scarcity.

Bengaluru may soon face Cape Town’s situation which is struggling for drinking water. The BBC report states, Bengaluru has been bamboozled by the growth of new property developments following its rise as a technological hub. Currently, the civic officials are struggling to manage the city's water and sewage systems.

The report notes that not a single lake in Bengaluru has suitable water for drinking or bathing. The city loses over half of its drinking water to waste due to the city's antiquated plumbing.

Bengaluru water bodies have been subjected to pollution. According to a report in The Guardian, Bengaluru had 285 lakes in the 1970s, the number of which reduced to 194 lakes in 2017. An in-depth inventory of the city's lakes found that 85% had water that could only be used for irrigation and industrial cooling.

The BBC report which comments on the global scarcity of water highlights that over one billion people lack access to water and another 2.7 billion find it scarce for at least one month of the year. A 2014 survey of the world's 500 largest cities estimates that one in four are in a situation of "water stress"

According to UN-endorsed projections, global demand for fresh water will exceed supply by 40% in 2030, thanks to a combination of climate change, human action and population growth.

Apart from Bengaluru, cities such as Sao Paulo, Beijing, Cairo, Jakarta, Moscow, Istanbul, Mexico City, London, Tokyo and Miami are on the verge of water crisis.

This man-made disaster could certainly have been avoided. Unless all Bengalureans wake up and take urgent and decisive corrective measures, backed by strong political willo, Bengaluru is in for very, very serious trouble!

The successive governments of Karnataka have destroyed the city plans of Sir M, Vishveshrayya . It was evident during recent floods in Bengaluru when new localities got flooded while those planned by Sir M.Vishveshrayya were least affected. Also lakes of Bengaluru which provided water are all vanished.

Exponential and unbridled growth in real estate in Bengaluru has a direct bearing on environment and human health. Buildings have come up in places where there were once trees or open spaces. What if this continues to happen even on the periphery of Namma Bengaluru? What are its long-term implications on the ecosystem?

A study conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) presents an alarming picture. It shows 525% growth in built-up area in the last four decades, 78% decline in vegetation 79% decline in water bodies. These are not just figures, but the lakes and trees that surrounded you have quietly disappeared as a result of the urban sprawl.

The cost of desalination plants is approximately $1m for every 1,000 cubic meters per day. Therefore, a large scale desalination plant serving 300,000 people typically cost around $100 million which is approximately 650 crore rupees. The costs of infrastructure to distribute water must be added to this.

We spend similar amount for building one statue in Gujarat, similar amount spent to building another statue in Maharashtra just to appease people for vote bank.

Bangalore is a choked city with dense population. Encroachment of water bodies is the route cause for the problems. There were plenty of lakes in Bangalore once upon a time, but it's difficult to identify the existing lakes or not at all present due to real estate mafia. This will surely lead to street fights for water in future if it's not addressed now itself.
Government should evict all those encroachments & lakes should be developed, repaired to store enough ground water management. Put a full stop to real estate mafia. Develop other cities like Mangalore, Mysore,Hubli,Dharwad,Gulbarga,Shivamogga etc....

Many experts have predicted this, and even said that many people will be forced to leave the city! Rampant drilling of bores has taken the water table much lower, and most will become dry over a period of time; majority lakes r highly polluted, and Bellandur lake is so polluted that it has caught fire a couple of times which indicates the grimness of the situation!!

We have to blame BMC (bangalore Muncipal corporation) only.

There were many lakes in bangalore. Instead of developing these lakes, they allowed to fill and construct buildings.

Stupid planning of BMC. Look at Mumbai which is supported by lakes. If they do not have brain to think at least copy Mumbai.

When we will learn to plan the city.
Depending on the increase in population or before you give licenses and collect taxes you need to plan for drinking water, power, sewage, roads, parking etc. But you simply collect taxes and do not bother about these.

People are made to struggle later. This is the story of almost all cities and towns. Absolutely there is no planning.
