Mangaluru: Milagres Church floor caves in due to century old grave beneath?

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, July 4: The floor of the Milagres Church in city has caved in due to suspected water flow and rodent activity. There is a speculation that a century old grave underneath that spot might have been filled with loose mud.

It is said that it is a common phenomenon in the graveyards quite often. It has been suggested that to prevent the recurrence of such events the best solution would be to clear the flooring top of that area upto a couple of square metres, pour some concrete and use a vibrator as well.

The whole flooring may also have to be removed to check on the issue as during the mass, the whole congregation gathers there creating a huge load on floor causing a possible collapse.

There are 109 graves and the coffins used 70 to 80 years ago which have turned to powder and mud is deposited in the church. Experts say there is a possibility of collapse in four other places.

There is no need to dig the entire floor, one can use a ground penetrating radar to look for cavities below the flooring

It is serious thing. In ancient times in big churches or cathedrals used to keep the coffeins or use as graveyards of Cardinals or famous persons in church itself .Their bodies ere balsamiert to remain long time So now they are already become dissolved and become a cave like .Due to lately earth quakes and many earth moves ,something must have happened. Now before cement fill up ,have to be observed by experts .Otherwise whole chuchyard including walls too may give off .Hope no big damage is there .But one never know.

Better not allow people inside before a structural audit by experts from IIT since there are high chances of this caving in expanding further and endanger the entire structure!!

Don’t disrespect anybody. All are human including all of us. Hindus are more tolerant and respectful towards Christians than many of others. I see many Hindus visits our churches and join hand and pray.

Mangalore has been the symbol of Hindu-Christian harmony from ages. Many a times, parties with vested interests try to disrupt this bonding. Even the above comment is one of the attempts!

Matter is very serious and scary indeed ! If at all the caved in portion is close the main pillars that may cause heavy damage to the structure (God forbid) This may restrict mass congregation on service hours. Peoples safety and protection looked into with priority.
