Mulki: Curfew Extended by 24 Hours

Mulki, Dec 4: Curfew in Mulky was relaxed on Sunday between 9 am and 11 am. The mad rush for commodities was a common sight.

However the curfew has been extended by another day. According to Superintendent of Police B Dayanand, the curfew will go on till 7 am on Dec 5 as a precautionary measure. He further informed that a total of 20 have been arrested and 10 cases registered.

The violence that broke out following the daylight murder of Sukhanand Shetty resulted in four shops being damaged and injuring around 13 police personnel.

The police are yet to place their hands on tangible clues in connection with the Shetty's murder.

Following curfew busses plying between Mangalore and Udupi plied via Moodbidre.

Mulki Turns Peaceful – Curfew Continues

Mulki, Dec 3: Mulki remains peaceful after instances of violence from Friday. In Kulai the murder of BJP Mulki unit General Secretary Sukhanand Shetty (32) and the death of two persons in police firing remained calm on Saturday.

ADGP Shankar Bidari who arrived at Mangalore visited the persons injured in the violence. Speaking to the media, he said that the wrong doers will be brought to book.
As many as 20 persons have been arrested in connection with the violence, he said.

The curfew will be in force till December 4. However regular plying of buses has not resumed which has affected normal life.

Following curfew being imposed in Mulki town, a total of 22 persons have been arrested. According to police sources, the arrested will be produced before the court.


However the leaders of a community who met the inspector general of police are said to have received assurance that the persons arrested will be given stern warnings and will be released on bail.


However further developments are awaited.

A resident of Mulki, Hamza, who owned two shops near the Mulki bus stand, died of heart attack when he heard the news that both his shops were destroyed by miscreants.


In the violence two persons were injured who have been identified as Nagaraj Padubidri and Suresh.


SP B Dayananda has halted in Mulki to monitor the situation.

Manampady Sukhananda Shetty (32), son of Bharati Shetty and the late Rama Shetty of Krishna Rice Mill, Kempugudde, Mulki,was the lone BJP member in the Mulki town municipal council. He had also served as an active member of the Shri Bappanadu Durga Parameshwari Temple renovation committee, Bappanadu, Mulki. Earlier an attempt on his life had been made on the night of October 2 by unidentified persons.

As the news of Shetty's brutal murder spread, crowds started gathering in Mulki town and incidents of loot and arson broke out. The national highway 17 leading from Mangalore to Udupi on to Mumbai was blocked. The police diverted the traffic through alternative routes. Tyres were burnt and barricades were laid violent crowds to create road blocks. It was only in the evening that the highway was cleared.

A grocery shop, a footwear shop, two flower shops and a fruit shop have been extensively damaged. A shop belonging to municipal vice chairman Abu Baqer was torched. A bike and a Tata Indica car were set on fire.

There were attempts to attack the police station, as people blamed the cops for their inaction in arresting the alleged the killers of Shetty.

After the arrival of deputy commissioner and ex-officio district magistrate Maheshwar Rao that the police were ordered to lob tear gas shells and also open fire in the air.

Permission had been denied to carry out a procession taking Shetty's mortal remains from Mangalore to Mulki over a distance of 29 kms on the national highway, but a large number of vehicles accompanied the ambulance up to Mulki. There were reports about houses, shops and places of worship being stoned on the way. The crowds were unmanageable and as they reached the police station in Mulki they indulged in stone-pelting and other violent acts. The police were finally ordered to open fire on the mob.

Shops were closed down in Kinnigoli, Kateel, Moorukaveri, Pakshikere and other places in protest against the killing. Crowds burnt tyres on the main road in Moorukaveri. A large of school children were seen in distress without having transport to return home.

Leaders condemn murder

Moodbidri MLA Abhayachandra Jain, Rajya Sabha member Janardhan Poojari, former minister Amaranath Shetty, Mangalore mayor Vijaya Arun, Udupi MP Manorama Madhwaraj, Mulki municipal chairperson Celine Monteiro, vice chairperson Abu Baqer and other leaders have condemned the murder of Sukhananda Shetty and urged the authorities to bring the culprits to book.

Mangalore, Dec 2: The latest reports from riot-hit Mulki and surrounding areas said that police have initiated prohibitory arrests as precaution.

Daijiworld correspondent reporting from Mulki said that the identity of both the persons killed in police firing has been established.  As reported earlier one was identified as Prem Chitrapu.  Now the fresh reports said the second deceased has been identified as Dinesh, a localite.


Nevertheless situation is fully under control in the area with adequate number of police patrolling in sensitive areas.  Senior police officials have based themselves in the region and taking stock of the situation.

District-in-charge minister Nagaraj Shetty visited injured persons at A J Hospital here on Friday night.  AGDP Shankar Bidari is expected to arrive in the city on Saturday morning to review the situation.

 

Update at 11.55 pm

Mangalore, Dec 1: It has been reported that the mob in a fit of rage damaged DCs official vehicle and pelted stones at several others.  Superintendent of police B Dayanand is said to have sustained injuries in the incidents of violene.  Sources also said that curfew has now been imposed in Mulki and surrounding areas.




Section 144 has been extended to Mangalore city limits. Meanwhile one among the two killed in firing has been identified as Prem Chitrapu.  The identity of the other person is yet to be established.

Update at 9.30 pm

Mangalore, Dec 1: Many days have not passed since the city limped back to normalcy after the communal violence that shook the entire populace in the month of October 06.  Having experienced the worst, no one expected a similar situation to pay a second visit.  But everything has been proved wrong after young BJP leader Sukhanand Shetty was hacked to death on Friday morning.

Despite tension mounting, situation was very much under control throughout the day.  Though there were number of rumours circling, hardly someone paid attention to it.  Just everyone was thinking that peace and normalcy would prevail, the situation turned worse after a mob tried to storm into Mulki police station late in the evening on Friday. Section 144 has been imposed in Mulki andl surrrounding areas after instances of violence. 

The funeral procession of Sukhanand Shetty that began from Mangalore city reached Bappanadu around 7 pm.  Though the entire procession was peaceful, some miscreants resorted to violence after reaching Mulki.  Though the police tried their best to control the situation, the mob consisting of more than 1,000 people overpowered the police.


 
  

So the police resorted to caning. Yet nothing could disperse the mob.  Finally the police lobbed tear gas and even when that failed to control the mob, they fired in the air.  Fresh reports have stated about the death of two persons who were reportedly seriously injured in police firing while an Indica car was torched and two police jeeps were damaged by the mob. 

The mob also stormed into several shops including a Dhaba and a flower shop. They also destroyed a sign board on its way toward the venue of cremation.

Police are in adequate force, informed reliable sources. However, several police vehicles including the vehicle of the inspector general of police were damaged in the violence. Trusted sources said that several persons have been injured inn violence and have already been rushed to hospital.

Mangalore, Dec 1: Mulki-Moodbidri constituency BJP general secretary Sukhanand Shetty was hacked to death by unidentified men at his office at Kulai near here on Friday December 1 morning.

Sukhanand Shetty (32) was also the Mulki panchayat member.  He was active member of local Hindu organization such as Bajrang Dal, Hindu Sene etc. 


   

On Friday morning he was on his way to his office around 10.15 am at Kulai when about 5-6 unidentified men who came on a Tamil Nadu registered car attacked him with sabres and sickles.  As a result, Sukhanand Shetty sustained serious injuries and was rushed to A J Hospital.

However, he succumbed to the injuries and was declared brought dead.  The doctors said that he died owing to excessive bleeding.



It was in the first week of October that a group had tried to murder him at a lonely place near Mulki.  But he had managed to escape then.  Several protests were held demanding the arrest of accused.  But the case had taken the backseat after communal clashes broke in the city on October 5.



Panambur DySP Pitambar Heraje and SP B Dayanand have already arrived on the spot and have arranged security measures.  Situation remains tensed in Mulki-Suratkal area.  But the police have taken adequate steps to meet any situation.
