Starting tomorrow, ATM use over 5 times/month will attract fee

New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) Using ATMs to withdraw money or for other purposes like balance enquiry beyond five times in a month will attract a levy of Rs 20 per transaction from tomorrow.

As per the Reserve Bank's new guidelines that comes into force from tomorrow, bank customers in six metros-- Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore-- are allowed to withdraw money and/or carry out non-financial transactions like mini-statements at ATMs of banks, where they hold saving/current accounts, free of charge only five times a month.

Every transaction beyond this threshold will be charged Rs 20 per use.
Besides, the number of free transactions at ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) of non-home banks has been cut to three times a month from five times.

"Taking into account the high density of ATMs, bank branches and alternate modes of payment available to customers, the number of mandatory free ATM transactions for savings bank account customers at other banks’ ATMs is reduced from the present 5 to 3 transactions per month (inclusive of both financial and non-financial transactions)," RBI had said in a notification issued in August this year.

The RBI, however, clarified that nothing precludes a bank from offering more than three free transactions at other bank ATMs to its account holders if it so desires.

The cap in the number of free ATM transactions will not apply on small/no-frills or basic savings bank deposit account holders who will continue to enjoy five free transactions.
At places other than the six metro centres, the facility of five free transactions for savings bank account customers will remain unchanged upon using other bank ATMs.

India has a total of 1.6 lakh bank ATMs across the country as of March 2014.
The new guidelines were issued in pursuance of a representation made to the RBI by Indian Banks' Association on the back of growing cost of ATM deployment and maintenance incurred by banks as well as rising interchange outgo due to free transactions.

The new initiative may be helpful to commercial banks to see imporvement in CASA balance as all most all banks are now have lot of pressure on their attempt to increase the balance under the segment which helps them to see better NIM ahead.Term deposit rate is already lowest and customers now have to shell out fees for additional ATM withdrawals too.For banks it is like 'rotti jaari thuppakke biddanthe'.....

RBI is giving advantages to the robbers. Earlier people were withdrawing money how much they want for a day or two. Now RBI made compulsory to withdraw more money so that good chance for the robbers. This way the robbery will increase. Good move RBI hats up....

ATM should b used only in case of emeregency. Rest , Manual withdrewal ( at banks ) of money once a month is always a better idea. It looks ATM is overly hyped but actually not a ' necessity '. Only compulsive shoppers fall prey to it , same applies to plastic credit cards.

    Dear Roshan,
I presume charges are for ATM uses. Swipes at malls shops, internet banking etc. are not considered as ATM use.

The ATMs of Vijaya Bank and Central Bank of India rarely work. They are always out of Cash or out of order !
So, the Customers of these Banks have no alternative but depend on ATMs of other Banks which means only three free withdrawals of Rs.10,000/-each that is total Rs.30000/- only.
So,RBI should ask Banks to increase the each drawing limit to Rs.20,000/- instead of present Rs.10000/- in other Bank ATMs?

Stupid move. There will be more crowd at the branches and operating costs will go up. Accounts are likely to be shifted to less crowded smaller banks.
In fact, offsite/ATM operations should be encouraged and branch visits penalized.

It is their tactics to make money. Banks pressurized RBI to make this happen.

People in 6 metro cities prefer spending 20 Rs over standing in long queue inside bank cash counter.

In smaller cities and villages people may prefer standing in queue to save 20 Rs. That is why it is not applicable in smaller cities.

Free ATM use of 5 times/month in home bank.
Non-home banks ATM use has been cut to 3 times/ month!
Drastic reduction of free transaction facility to customers!
Difficult to imagine, how ATM's already deployed, but their operations are costing more than manual transactions at Bank's branches?
How the banks are going to compensate for the inconvenience caused to customers?
It is RBI guidelines for minimum free transactions, Banks are free to give more than stipulated free transactions.

I guess max is 5 times..3 out of 5 times you use atm of any bank regardless of the branch then thats it..you have used your allowed quota for Non branch atm..what is then left is only 2 chances of your branch atm. This is what i feel..What do you think..??If not otherwise what you have mentioned is true..

NO, 3 times other Bank ATM and 5 times from the ATM of the Bank, where you have an Account.Total 8 times Free withdrawal in a month. 8 times Free withdrawal in a month should be sufficient I believe.
