UN urges Afghans to vote again in presidential polls

United Nations, Jun 13 (IANS): UN secretary-general's special representative for Afghanistan, Jan Kubis urged Afghans to take part in Saturday's second round of the presidential polls, media reported Friday.

Kubis, "called on the two candidates vying for the presidency to urge their supporters to not commit fraud and respect the work of the country's independent electoral institutions in managing the election process," a UN spokesman quoted Kubis as saying Thursday.

"Kubis also recommended that the two candidates work together in addressing and finding solutions to any problems that could arise," Xinhua quoted the spokesman as saying.

The Afghan presidential polls will go into the second round after the preliminary result showed in April that none of the candidates obtained an outright victory.

Abdullah Abdullah was ahead with 44.9 percent of the votes, followed by Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai who obtained 31.5 percent and Zalmai Rassoul, 11.5 percent.
