Karkala, Aug 25: Barricades installed on highways near schools to control vehicle speed and ensure children’s safety have now become a major source of concern for motorists.
At Belman, just a few metres from the main market area and near the church-side school, four barricades have been fixed across the highway to slow down traffic when students cross. However, since these barricades are not removed at night, they pose a serious risk to vehicles moving at high speed.

Residents allege that while the barricades serve their purpose during school hours, the lack of reflectors and warning lights at night makes them highly dangerous. Motorists approaching at speed often notice the barricades only at the last moment, leading to sudden braking and loss of control. Several two-wheelers and other vehicles have already met with mishaps in recent weeks.
Public opinion suggests alternative measures such as installing proper signboards or fitting the barricades with bright reflectors. Locals have urged the authorities and the school management to act immediately, stressing that while children’s safety is paramount, smooth flow of traffic must also be ensured. If corrective steps are not taken soon, there are fears of more accidents in the days ahead.
Residents have also demanded that the barricades be retained only during school hours and removed at night or during school holidays, when they serve no real purpose.
“Children’s safety is important, but removing these barricades at night will not inconvenience anyone. Authorities must act quickly,” said Sudheesh, a motorist.
“Proper alternatives are needed. The current reflectors are barely visible, and during rainy nights the barricades are almost invisible. Officials must take this matter seriously,” added Surendra, a local resident.
