Udupi, Aug 24: A sudden dash by a stray dog across the busy National Highway 66 near Theme Palace Hall in Hejamadi village has claimed the life of a prominent social activist and Dalit leader, after a scooter accident turned fatal.

The victim, Umanath, was riding his scooter on the night of August 12 when a dog reportedly ran across the road without warning, causing his vehicle to overturn. He sustained serious injuries in the fall and was rushed to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru.

After battling for life for over ten days, Umanath succumbed to his injuries on the morning of August 23, hospital sources confirmed.

A resident of Sujnan Colony, Umanath was widely known for his work in Dalit rights activism and his involvement with the Congress party and various social organisations. His sudden demise has left his peers and supporters in deep shock.

“He was a fearless voice for the marginalised. His loss is not just to the family, but to the entire community,” said a local activist who worked closely with him.

Umanath is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. The incident has been officially recorded at the Padubidri police station, and investigations are ongoing.

High time to handle the street dog menace cases. They should be kept in check, and sterilisation must be done to prevent their uncontrolled breeding. We need to look into this matter. When I was studying in Manipal, my friend was bitten twice by stray dogs, and he had to take the vaccine twice. We must control the stray dog population by all means
