New Delhi, Aug 25: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has questioned Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s moral stand, asking if it has shifted after three consecutive poll defeats.
Speaking to ANI, Shah recalled how Gandhi had “torn” an ordinance in 2013 that sought to shield RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav, contrasting it with his present opposition to the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025. The bill proposes that a Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or Cabinet Minister detained for over 30 days should vacate office.

“Why did Rahul Ji tear the ordinance that Manmohan Singh brought to protect Lalu Ji? If there was morality that day, what happened now? Morality should remain constant like the Sun and Moon, not change with election results,” Shah remarked.
He questioned whether it was right for a constitutional post-holder to govern from jail. “Is it appropriate for democracy that a PM, CM or minister runs their government from jail? If bail is not granted, then you must leave the post,” he said.
Drawing from personal experience, Shah said he had resigned the very next day after being summoned by the CBI in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case, and only took constitutional office once acquitted. “What lessons on morality is the opposition teaching me?” he asked.
Accusing the opposition of wanting to “run governments from jail,” Shah alleged that the INDIA bloc was following a tradition set during Indira Gandhi’s era. He also criticised Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia for not resigning despite arrests.
Shah exuded confidence that the bill would sail through Parliament, noting that many opposition MPs too “would support morality over politics.”
During the monsoon session, Shah introduced the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and a bill amending the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, all of which have been referred to a joint parliamentary committee.
