Kaup, Aug 24: A 70-year-old pedestrian was killed after being struck by a fast-moving car while waiting to cross National Highway 66 near Koppalangadi, close to Kaup, on Sunday afternoon around 3:30 pm.

The deceased has been identified as Peeru Saheb, a resident of Koppalangadi.

According to police sources, Peeru Saheb was standing at the roadside, reportedly preparing to cross the highway, when a car travelling at high speed from Mangaluru towards Udupi hit him. The impact caused severe injuries.

He was immediately assisted by the SDPI’s ambulance service and rushed to a private hospital in Udupi, but succumbed to his injuries en route.

Kaup police visited the spot soon after the incident and are conducting a detailed investigation. The identity of the driver and specifics of the vehicle involved have not yet been disclosed.

The tragic accident has renewed concerns over pedestrian safety on NH-66, particularly in semi-urban areas like Koppalangadi, where vehicles often move at high speeds and pedestrian crossings are limited or poorly marked.

Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.

One side I dont blame the auto driver.Highway is there to drive fast and Pedestrians have to seek a open and visible place to cross. But he was standing at the road side?or almost on road?Sad he passed away by accident.May his soul rest in peace.Hope this clears soon .Heartfelt sympathies to his family.

It is a NH and that's what it is supposed to be. I a do not blame the pedestrian, but blame the "Government" for not having pedestrian bridge for crossing. No NH anywhere in the world can you WALK & CROSS, HORSE carriage or BULLOCK carts or Cyclists allowed. That's why it called a HIGHWAY.

"A 70-year-old pedestrian was killed after being struck by a fast-moving car while waiting to cross National Highway 66" The driver could have slowed down with proper indication to other passing vehicles to slow down, if at all he had enough patience and courtesy to help the old man to cross the road out of humanity.

It’s highway drivers won’t be able to handle if some one suddenly comes in front of moving car,it depends on how government as planned to construct the road, courtesy can be shown in slow moving traffic ,but in case of highways it’s not possible.

RIP. We must redefine this road from highway to just a main road and reduce the limit and have zebra crossing. And also educate drivers about Zebra crossing. Better to go to Mars instead.
