Puttur clash: Three cases registered, one accused remanded to judicial custody

Puttur, Aug 22: The City police here have registered three separate cases in connection with a clash reported at Darbe in Puttur on Friday August 21. The cases involve allegations of assault, threats and obstruction of police personnel while they were attempting to control the situation.

According to the complaint filed by Fathimath Miswana (32), a resident of Jalsoor in Sullia, she had come to Puttur with her brother and sister on August 21. Around noon, they had submitted some documents for printing and lamination at Dream Destination Janaseva Kendra in Darbe, Puttur.

After some time, when they returned to collect the documents, they found that one of the documents had been damaged. She objected to this and asked the staff either to rectify the document or provide Rs 300 to obtain a new document.

In this regard, the accused Anjana Pai and Sudarshan Pai, who were present at the shop, allegedly abused her verbally. Sudarshan Pai allegedly assaulted the complainant and her sister and threatened them with death. People who gathered at the spot intervened and stopped the quarrel. The complainant, her sister and brother were subsequently provided treatment and admitted to Puttur Government Hospital.

Based on the complaint, Puttur City Police Station registered Case No. 97/2026 under Sections 352, 115(2) and 109, read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Accused Sudarshan Pai was arrested and produced before the court. The court remanded him to judicial custody until September 2.

Sudarshan Pai (29), a resident of Puttur Kasaba, who was arrested in connection with Case No. 97/2026, had previously been booked in a case at Kankanady police station under Case No. 182/2025 under Section 8(C) of the NDPS Act. A case had also been registered against him at Kudoor police station in Ramanagara district under Case No. 87/2021 under Sections 307 and 504, read with Section 34 of the IPC.

Police clarified that Sudarshan Pai's father, Sadashiva Pai, was not present at the spot when the incident occurred. He came to the location after the quarrel and attempted to stop it.

According to the complaint filed by Anjana S Pai (50), a resident of Puttur Kasaba, she runs a Janaseva Kendra named Dream Destination at Darbe in Puttur.

On August 21, around noon, a document submitted by a woman for lamination was damaged due to a technical error. In the evening, the shop staff informed the complainant that the woman who had submitted the document was creating a scene. The complainant immediately went to the shop.

At the spot, two women and a man were allegedly creating a disturbance and demanded that the documents be provided or Rs 10,000 be paid. The complainant tried to pacify them. They allegedly attempted to record a video, verbally abused and assaulted her, while another accused allegedly threatened her with death.

Based on her complaint against Fathimath Miswana, Mubashira, Mubarish and Naushad, Puttur City Police Station registered Case No. 98/2026 under Sections 115(2), 352, 351(2) and 79, read with Section 3(5) of the BNS, 2023. Investigation is underway.

On August 21 evening, Puttur City police inspector Johnson D'Souza received information that some members of the public were involved in a quarrel in front of Dream Destination Janaseva Kendra near Darbe Junction in Puttur Kasaba village.

The inspector, along with police officers and staff, went to the spot and found a crowd gathered there. While the police were dispersing the crowd, some persons allegedly obstructed them from performing their duties.

When police were taking some persons involved in the quarrel to the police station, Niyaz, Naushad and others allegedly obstructed them and interfered with the discharge of their duties.

In this regard, Puttur City police station registered Case No. 99/2026 under Sections 132 and 121(1), read with Section 3(5) of the BNS, 2023. Investigation is underway.

A large number of members of the public had gathered at the spot during the incident. Police instructed the crowd to leave the area in the interest of maintaining law and order. When they did not disperse despite the instructions, police carried out a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd.
