Mangaluru, Apr 21: In a groundbreaking medical feat, a team of doctors at Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) has successfully performed a rare and complex coronary angioplasty, saving the life of a 46-year-old high-risk cardiac patient from Kasargod district, Keralam.
The patient approached Dr H Prabhakar, chief interventional cardiologist, with complaints of severe breathing complications, fatigue, and weakness that restricted her routine movements. Upon clinical examination, it was found that the patient was suffering from a very rare condition known as Takayasu disease. Both major arteries supplying blood to her heart were blocked, leading to severely compromised heart function and making surgical intervention extremely risky.

Accepting the challenge, Dr H Prabhakar assembled a multi-disciplinary cardiac team, including expert cardiologists Dr Pradeep Pereira, Dr Jostal Pinto, and Dr Ashoka. The team meticulously planned a life-saving procedure adopting advanced imaging techniques and specialised cutting balloon technology.
Given the patient’s critical condition, the complex coronary angioplasty was carried out in two stages over two separate days. The intervention successfully restored normal blood flow to the heart, marking a significant medical success. The patient responded positively, recovered fully, and was discharged after adequate post-operative monitoring.
Speaking about the procedure, Dr H Prabhakar stated that advancements in medical technology have enabled doctors to treat high-risk patients with greater precision and safety.
The director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo congratulated the medical team on their exemplary achievement.
