15-km chase ends in dramatic arrest of bribe-taking official in Kolar

Kolar, Mar 20: In a dramatic, film-style chase, Lokayukta police chased a car for nearly 15 kilometres and arrested an assistant drug controller who attempted to flee with bribe money in Kolar.

The arrested accused are identified as J Shyamala assistant drug controller, Kolar; Srinivas:, retired ‘D’ group employee; and Mahanthesh, car driver.

A medical shop owner from Tekal had submitted an application seeking permission to relocate his shop. It is alleged that officer Shyamala had demanded a bribe of Rs 35,000 to process the request. Based on a complaint filed by the victim, Lokayukta police laid a trap.

While the officer was seated in her car at Tekal and accepting the bribe money, a Lokayukta team led by district SP Antony John conducted a raid. On spotting the police, Shyamala panicked and attempted to flee in the car along with the cash. The vehicle sped along the Bangarapete road at high speed.

The Lokayukta team pursued the car continuously for about 15 km and finally intercepted it in a dramatic manner, successfully taking all three accused into custody.

“J Shyamala and her two associates, who attempted to escape while accepting the bribe, have been arrested. The bribe amount has been seized, and further legal action is being initiated,” said Lokayukta SP.
