Sullia, Mar 16: In a first-of-its-kind judgment in Dakshina Kannada district, a local court has awarded a unique punishment to a youth for repeated traffic violations, ordering him to create public awareness rather than just paying a fine.
The accused, Rakshith G, a resident of Sullia, was facing three separate cases registered under the IMV Act sections 119 R/w 177, 184, and 194(C). The Sullia police sub-inspector Santosh B P had submitted the charge sheet to the Sullia SCJ and JMFC court.

15 days of community service
Upon hearing the cases, the court ordered the accused to pay a total fine of Rs 3,000 for two cases. For the third aspect of the violation, the court directed him to perform 15 days of 'community service' from March 15 to March 29.
As per the court's direction, Rakshith is required to stand at major junctions in Sullia town holding placards that contain information on traffic rules. He is also tasked with assisting the police in streamlining traffic and educating the general public about the importance of following road safety regulations.
License suspended
Taking a serious view of the repeated nature of the offences, the court has also ordered the suspension of the accused's driving license for a period of three months.
This exemplary punishment has garnered significant attention in the taluk, with many noting that such creative sentencing serves as a better deterrent than monetary fines alone, forcing violators to reflect on the importance of law and order.
