New Delhi, Dec 16: Saline nasal care, a common practice in many Indian homes, involves using a saltwater solution to rinse, moisturize, and clear the nasal passages. While it’s long been a go-to remedy for colds and nasal congestion, recent research highlights its potential to help children recover more quickly from upper respiratory infections.
Colds are frequent among babies and young children, and parents often search for easy, safe remedies. A large clinical study now shows that simple saltwater nasal drops can shorten a child’s cold by about two days. Additionally, these drops may help reduce the spread of the virus to other family members.

The ELVIS-Kids trial, one of the largest studies on saline use in children, examined 407 kids under six. Some parents used homemade saline drops, while others provided usual care. Children who received saline recovered in about six days, compared to eight days for those without it. Families also reported fewer secondary infections among siblings and parents, along with less need for additional medications.
Saline works by flushing out mucus, dust, and germs, easing nasal congestion, and supporting the nasal lining in fighting viruses and reducing inflammation. Drops or gentle sprays can be purchased in stores or made at home with safe, sterile water.
Beyond faster recovery, saline improves overall comfort. Children often experience less runny nose, easier breathing, reduced need for decongestants, and sometimes even better sleep. Pediatricians frequently recommend saline as a first-line remedy because it is low-risk and can be used repeatedly. Side effects are rare, typically limited to mild irritation or a brief burning sensation.
While the research is promising, not all studies are conclusive. Variations in age groups, methods, and study sizes mean results may differ, and larger trials are needed to understand the full benefits of saline, including its potential to limit virus transmission.
For parents trying saline care at home, some key tips include using boiled (then cooled) or sterile water, consulting your child’s doctor about the correct method for their age, and administering it gently to keep your child comfortable. With these simple steps, many parents see improvement within a few days. If symptoms worsen or persist, it’s important to seek medical advice.
