Telangana cracks down on adulterated sweets ahead of Diwali

Daijiworld Media Network – Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Oct 19: In a major pre-Diwali drive, Telangana’s Food Safety teams conducted statewide inspections of sweet manufacturing units and retail outlets, uncovering widespread hygiene lapses and food adulteration across all 33 districts.

The crackdown revealed the persistent use of banned synthetic colours in milk-based sweets like jalebi, laddus, and khoya items, adulterated ghee, reused cooking oil, and non-food-grade silver foil. Out of 95 units inspected, several were found violating critical food safety norms.

Retail inspections also exposed unlabelled and expired products. Authorities seized over 60 kg of sweets, 40 kg of bread, and other adulterated items. Contaminated sweets were discarded on-site, and improvement notices were issued for unhygienic establishments.

The teams collected 77 enforcement samples and 157 surveillance samples, all sent to the Food Testing Laboratory for detailed analysis. Spot testing with Food Safety on Wheels vehicles provided immediate feedback on product quality.

The drive was conducted under the #FoodSafetyTelangana initiative, aligned with the national @fssaiindia #EatRightIndia campaign. Authorities issued a consumer advisory urging buyers to purchase from licensed outlets with valid FSSAI registration, avoid brightly coloured or non-food-grade silver foil sweets, and check packaging and expiry dates carefully.

Consumers were advised to avoid stale or unusually odorous products and to prioritize hygiene and safety while buying festive sweets this Diwali.
