Goa government to set up advanced solid waste management system in industrial estates

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Oct 15: The Goa government has announced plans to establish a comprehensive solid waste management system for the Pissurlem and Cuncolim industrial estate clusters, aiming to enhance infrastructure, attract investment, and provide world-class civic amenities.

The new solid waste management processing facility (SWMPF) will have a minimum handling capacity of five tonnes per day, scalable to meet future needs. The Pissurlem cluster includes Bicholim, Latambarcem, Honda, Pissurlem, and Dharbandora industrial estates, while the Cuncolim cluster comprises Cuncolim, Kakoda, Margao, Sanguem, Cancona, and Quitol estates. The Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) will appoint a service provider to manage solid waste across both clusters.

The service provider will operate from a pre-constructed shed provided by the GIDC and will install all necessary machinery, equipment, and tools at its own cost. The company must secure all clearances and authorisations from the Goa State Pollution Control Board, labour department, and other competent authorities.

The appointed company will be responsible for collecting waste from all industrial, commercial, and utility establishments within the clusters, excluding industrial hazardous waste.

Segregated collection at the source will be ensured, with separate bins for wet and dry waste placed at litter collection points identified in consultation with the GIDC. Waste will be transported using covered, compartmentalised, GPS-enabled vehicles to prevent spillage and ensure safe delivery to the SWMPF or approved facilities.

At the SWMPF, collected waste will be segregated into wet, dry, sanitary, and hazardous categories. Wet waste will be treated through composting, biomethanation, or other approved technologies, while dry waste—both recyclable and non-recyclable—will be sent to the Goa Waste Management Corporation or other statutory-approved facilities, with disposal certificates obtained for compliance.

This initiative reflects Goa’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth and modern waste management practices, ensuring cleaner, safer, and more efficient industrial estate operations.
