Goa’s social welfare minister: Actual number of persons with disabilities likely double the count

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Oct 7: Goa’s Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phaldesai has revealed that the number of persons with disabilities (PwDs) in the state could be more than twice the officially recorded figure.

Speaking to reporters, Phaldesai said that while 35,000 PwDs have been officially identified, the actual count could be closer to 80,000.

To address the gap, the minister announced that the government will launch a comprehensive state-wide survey to determine accurate figures. “The survey will be conducted through government officers to ensure that every eligible individual is identified,” he said.

Phaldesai emphasised that the move will help the state government plan and deliver welfare schemes more effectively, ensuring that benefits reach all deserving citizens.

The initiative aims to strengthen data-driven policies for PwDs and improve access to various social welfare programmes in Goa.
