Panaji, Aug 31: Relief is on the way for commuters traveling between Karnataka and Goa via Chorla, as authorities have begun emergency repairs on the severely damaged Belagavi-Goa road, following a public outcry and media coverage.
The National Highways Authority and Karnataka Public Works Department (PWD) initiated the repair work on Saturday morning, particularly focusing on the 8-kilometre stretch between Kankumbi and Jamboti, which had become nearly impassable due to potholes and rain-induced damage.
PWD teams began filling potholes using Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) as a temporary fix, with engineers from both NH and PWD supervising the ongoing works. NH Executive Engineer Rajendra stated that continuous rains were limiting the extent of the repairs that could be done currently.

“As it is raining heavily, we cannot do much right now. As a temporary measure, we are filling potholes with WMM. A grader machine will also be used to level them. Once the rains stop, permanent repairs will be carried out on priority,” Rajendra said.
He also noted that the absence of roadside drainage and overhanging tree branches was exacerbating the problem, calling for inter-departmental coordination for a more durable solution.
On this, Deputy Conservator of Forests Maria Christu Raja confirmed that the Range Forest Officer, Shivakumar, had been instructed to prepare a report, after which necessary forest clearances for digging trenches and tree trimming would be granted.
Frequent travelers on the route, especially weekend commuters from Goa to Belagavi, expressed relief and appreciation toward The Goan for spotlighting the issue and hoped that long-term repairs would soon follow the interim measures.
This road is not only a key route for tourism and trade but also an essential lifeline between Goa and North Karnataka, making its timely repair a top priority for regional connectivity and safety.
