Vasco, Aug 26: In a strategic move to re-establish Goa as a key player in global maritime trade, Transport and Industries minister Mauvin Godinho announced that the revival of container services at Mormugao Port will significantly ease logistics, lower costs for businesses, and unlock new opportunities for Goan industries.
Speaking at the Trade Meet 2025, organised by Delta Ports Mormugao Terminal Pvt Ltd in collaboration with the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) and supported by Goa Industrial Development Corporation (Goa-IDC), Godinho urged local industries to fully utilise the upgraded port infrastructure. “This port is a valuable natural asset. With new cranes and world-class facilities, MPA is setting the stage for a logistics revolution that can support sectors like pharmaceuticals, where Goa already contributes 8% of global production,” he said.
Strengthening Goa’s Industrial Backbone
Goa-IDC chairman Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco underlined the importance of logistics in driving industrial expansion and assured full support to industries looking to streamline supply chains. MPA deputy chairperson Vinayak Rao recalled the port’s historic significance, noting that despite setbacks like the mining ban, the facility is now on a strong growth trajectory.
“With the new 30-year concession agreement between MPA and Delta Ports, we are confident in re-establishing Mormugao as a dynamic container hub,” said Rao.
Direct Gains for Goan MSMEs
Goa-IDC managing director Pravimal Abhishek, IAS, emphasized the direct benefits to Goa’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs), noting that the revival will eliminate the need to transport goods to ports in JNPT or Navi Mumbai, saving time and cost.
Delta Ports MD Shamil Ahmed echoed the enthusiasm, stating that Mormugao’s geographic advantage, upgraded infrastructure, and improved multimodal connectivity make it an ideal container hub once again. “We are committed to faster turnaround, reduced costs, and modern facilities for the trading community,” he added.
Collaborative Vision for Sustainable Growth
A key highlight of the event was the panel discussion titled “Charting a New Course: Synergising Stakeholders to Revive and Expand Goa Port’s Container Services,” featuring leaders from MPA, Delta Ports, Unifeeder, and Deccan Chemicals. The session focused on stakeholder synergy to build a more resilient and sustainable maritime ecosystem.
The meet concluded with a unified call for collaboration among industry, government, and port authorities to position Goa as a competitive and efficient gateway to international trade.
