New Delhi, Aug 17: Basil, revered in Ayurveda as the “elixir of life,” has now received strong scientific backing for its stress-busting powers. A recent clinical study has shown that Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), also known as Tulsi, can significantly reduce cortisol levels — the body’s primary stress hormone — by up to 36%.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, published in the National Library of Medicine, tested the effects of Holy Basil extract (Holixer™) on 100 adults aged 18–65 experiencing stress. Participants were given either a placebo or 125 mg of Holy Basil extract twice daily for eight weeks.

Using hair and saliva samples, researchers measured cortisol levels, blood pressure, and sleep quality. The results were striking — those taking the extract recorded a 36% drop in hair cortisol, lower salivary cortisol, reduced blood pressure after stress, and improved sleep quality as per the Athens insomnia scale and sleep trackers.

“Holy Basil not only calmed the body’s stress response but also enhanced overall wellbeing, including better sleep,” the researchers noted.

For consumers, the findings reaffirm what Ayurveda has long claimed — Tulsi helps the body fight anxiety, fatigue, weakened immunity, and poor sleep caused by elevated cortisol. Experts, however, advise using standardized extracts as tested in the study and consulting a healthcare provider before starting supplementation.

With lifestyles today driving chronic stress, Holy Basil stands out as a natural ally in restoring balance. This research adds to the growing scientific evidence supporting Ayurvedic herbs for modern-day health challenges.
