Panaji, Aug 13: Panaji police have arrested Mirza Sheraz Alibaigh, an orthopaedic surgeon from Hyderabad, Telangana, for allegedly cheating a Goan jeweller by showing a fake payment screenshot to acquire gold ornaments worth Rs 1.41 lakh.

According to Superintendent of Police (North) Rahul Gupta, jeweller Tejas Salkar, owner of Aurum Jewels in Panaji Market, reported that on August 11, the accused purchased multiple gold items, including a gold chain (2.75 g), a short mangalsutra (7.7 g), a Ganesh locket (0.85 g), a pair of earrings (1.48 g), and another locket (1.87 g).

“The accused claimed to have paid Rs 1,41,157 via RTGS and presented a fake screenshot as proof. However, no such transaction was recorded in the jeweller’s account,” the officer explained.

The police arrested Alibaigh on Tuesday and recovered all the gold ornaments. Initial investigations revealed his alleged involvement in seven similar fraud cases across various states.
