Mumbai, Aug 11: High cholesterol, often symptomless, remains a silent health threat, and in some cases, it stays stubbornly high despite medication. Nutritionist Anjali Mukerjee, in her latest Instagram video, explained why cholesterol levels sometimes refuse to drop even when taking statins.
Cholesterol, a waxy substance essential for the body’s functioning, turns harmful when excess LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, builds up in arteries, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. While statins work by blocking the enzyme responsible for cholesterol production in the liver, Mukerjee says lifestyle factors can override their effects.
She points out two main culprits — excess carbohydrate intake, including refined sugars as well as staples like rice, rotis, and grains, which trigger insulin and reactivate the very enzyme statins aim to block, and chronic inflammation, which prompts the liver to produce more cholesterol.
Mukerjee advises cutting down on carbs, managing inflammation through healthy foods, good sleep, and regular activity, and focusing on root-cause healing rather than relying solely on medication.
