Udupi, Aug 8: Udupi, celebrated as an educational, cultural and tourist hub of Karnataka, is facing serious neglect when it comes to public infrastructure—particularly its bus terminals. A stark example is the Udupi KSRTC bus stand, which presents a dismal picture for both locals and visitors.

The poor state of the facility is evident the moment one steps inside. Betel leaf stains, gutka spit marks, and piles of litter mar the premises. Broken structures and non-functional shelters make waiting for a bus uncomfortable—and in some spots, nearly impossible—thanks to leaking roofs, dusty canopies, and unmaintained spaces.

The Udupi KSRTC bus stand serves hundreds of passengers daily, with travellers arriving from across Karnataka and neighbouring states. While the terminal was originally built with wide roofing to protect passengers from sun and rain, much of it is now coated in thick dust or damaged beyond repair.

Basic amenities are in equally poor shape. Public toilets are unhygienic and poorly maintained. Garbage—ranging from empty liquor bottles to cigarette packs—lies scattered around due to the absence of proper waste management. The stench and filth create a health hazard and add to the general unpleasantness.

What is most striking is the lack of intervention from the authorities. Despite Udupi’s status as a major tourist and educational destination, the condition of its main bus stand signals a serious lapse in maintenance and public accountability.

Immediate action is essential. The facility needs proper sanitation, repaired infrastructure, and basic amenities like drinking water and clean restrooms.

Social worker Ganeshraj Saralabettu said, “The KSRTC bus stop was built at a cost of Rs 40 crore, but its current condition is alarming. There is no cleanliness in the premises or washrooms. The concerned officers must act immediately. Udupi attracts visitors from across the country, yet this is the state of its government bus stop. The roof leaks, lighting is inadequate, and there is no proper drinking water facility. Adequate lighting, drinking water, and regular washroom maintenance must be ensured.”
