Udupi, Jul 30: In today’s modern world, school students need to develop technological skills alongside their academic education, and teachers play a key role in guiding them in this direction, said Brigadier Dr Surjit Singh Pabla, chairman of the Manipal Skill Development Centre.
He was speaking at the inauguration of a teacher capacity-building workshop held on Wednesday at the Anugraha Pastoral Centre of diocese of Udupi. The event was organised by the Manipal Skill Development Centre in association with the Catholic Education Society of the Udupi diocese, supported by Infosys Springboard.

“In the current era, the use of information technology is crucial in all sectors, including education. The government is also emphasizing the inclusion of IT and skill development in the academic curriculum. Teachers need to be aware and proficient in the use of technology to pass on its benefits to students,” Dr Pabla stated.
He emphasised that technological skills are essential for higher education and research, enabling students to collect valuable resources and utilise them in a competitive global environment. Leveraging IT skills after education can also open the door to better career opportunities, he added.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr Anjayya Devineni, registrar of the Manipal Skill Development Centre; programme coordinator Rajalakshmi Anandan; and resource persons Aishwarya Rajeev and Deeptha Padmanabhan.
Fr Vincent Crasta, secretary of the Catholic Education Society, Udupi diocese, welcomed the gathering, while Cynthia Menezes compered the programme and delivered the vote of thanks.
Over 70 teachers from various schools across the district participated in the workshop and gained insights into topics such as artificial intelligence in school curriculum and skill development.
