Mangaluru, July 2: In an effort to strengthen Anganwadis and provide children with an early foundation in English, preparations are underway to introduce LKG and UKG classes in 110 Anganwadis across the coastal region.
The initiative will cover 70 Anganwadis in Dakshina Kannada and 40 in Udupi district, with the Department of Women and Child Welfare commencing preliminary arrangements. Though official orders are yet to be issued, sources indicate that the classes are likely to begin from August 2.

While the education department had earlier proposed starting pre-primary (LKG/UKG) sections within government schools, it faced opposition from Anganwadi workers and helpers' associations. They argued that opening pre-primary centres in schools could lead to the closure of Anganwadis. Following this, the government agreed to start the LKG and UKG sections within the Anganwadi centres themselves.
Special training for staff
According to Shaila K Karigi, Mangaluru rural child development project officer, selected Anganwadi workers and helpers will undergo phased training to deliver LKG and UKG lessons effectively. The government will provide free textbooks, instruction, and mid-day meals to enrolled students.
“Preparations to start LKG and UKG classes in Anganwadis are already underway. Centres with proper infrastructure have been selected and equipped with smart TVs and textbooks. Classes will commence as soon as official instructions are received,” said Usman, deputy director, Department of Women and Child Development, Dakshina Kannada.
