Udupi: Heavy rains flood low-lying areas in dist; red alert continues

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, June 16: Several low-lying areas across Udupi district have been inundated following incessant rains that have lashed the region over the past four days.

Byndoor, Kundapur, and Karkala taluks are among the worst affected, with continuous downpours causing rivers to swell and flow above the safe mark. The strong current has raised fears of flooding among residents. Barkur too has reported a flood-like situation.

In view of the worsening conditions, the district administration has declared a holiday for all schools and Anganwadi centres across the district. However, PU colleges, degree colleges, and technical institutions have not been given holidays. Students in Byndoor and surrounding areas struggled to reach their institutions due to the flooded roads and waterlogged areas.

Emergency service teams have been deployed to the affected areas and are engaged in rescue operations. MLA Gururaj Gantihole and assistant commissioner Rashmi visited the affected regions to oversee the response efforts.

Meanwhile, in Kavradi village of Kundapur taluk, a house was partially damaged after a large tree fell due to strong winds.

The red alert for Udupi district remains in place for June 16, with forecasts predicting continued heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Fishermen and tourists have been advised not to venture into the sea. Residents in low-lying areas and near riverbanks have been urged to take necessary precautions.
