Udupi, Jun 11: In a commendable act of humanity, an auto driver saved the life of an elderly man who collapsed in the middle of the road after suffering from chest pain during the early hours of June 11.
The incident occurred on the Udupi–Manipal road. The elderly man, experiencing severe chest pain, was driving himself to the hospital when he lost control of his car near Laxmindranagara due to the worsening condition. The car veered off the road and hit an electric pole. Despite the accident, the man managed to exit the vehicle but collapsed on the roadside in heavy rain.

Auto-rickshaw driver Mohammed Shameer, who was traveling from Udupi towards Manipal, noticed the man lying on the roadside. Without hesitation, he rushed the man to Manipal Hospital in his auto. Shameer also communicated with the man, obtained his family details, and promptly informed the patient’s elder brother.
Speaking to daijiworld.com, Mohammed Shameer said, “At first glance, I thought he was a drunk person. But once he explained his situation, I didn’t waste a second and rushed him to the hospital. There could have been a risk of theft or robbery, as the patient was wearing gold jewellery and his car windows were open. After informing his brother, the family members arrived at the hospital and took charge. Doctors told us that if there had been any further delay, it could have cost him his life. It was my duty to help, especially since there was no one else on the road at that early hour.”
The patient is said to belong to a renowned family in Udupi and was living alone at his residence.
