Mangaluru, Apr 10: St Agnes Pre-University College, Mangaluru started by the Apostolic Carmel Sisters is a minority educational institution. The Apostolic Carmel congregation was founded by Venerable Mother Veronica of the Passion at Bayonne, France in 1868 and was established at St Ann’s campus, Mangaluru in 1870 with the specific goal of empowering women in India.
The Apostolic Carmel Educational Society runs several educational institutions and St Agnes PU College is one among them. Historically, it is the first Catholic women’s college established in South India and the second in the country. The college has students from all communities and denominations.
The college is a pioneer in the education of young women and has been at the forefront of a cultural and social renaissance with regard to the rights and roles of women. This has its source and origin in the philosophy and teaching of its founder Mother Aloysia who started St Agnes College in 1920.
A rigorous academic programme is at the core of everything and the vibrant learning milieu is reflected in the consistently high academic results that the college garners every year. The fundamental principle that permeates and governs the institution is the motto, ‘God is our Strength’. Therefore, their ardent endeavor is to prepare each student for academic, social and personal success in a constantly evolving globalized environment.
A Multipronged Approach towards Education
Pre-University education offers unique and multiple challenges, for it is a stepping stone to any professional course a student may opt for and it has to prepare them in a limited time for various competitive examinations as they believe that each student is an individual with infinite potential. IITians and Doctors from ‘Vividya’ having vast teaching experience provide comprehensive and quality coaching to students who are preparing to appear for NEET, JEE and CET examinations. Professionally qualified individuals meticulously groom students to answer CPT – a CA Foundation Course and CSAT (a foundation course for Civil Service Examinations). Coaching in the regular syllabus is also provided.

Clubs - Oratio, Srishti, Teckclique, Craftastic, Agnetio, Hanathe, Agno Humanica, Spectrum, Data Pirate, Mathemagician, Eagle Eyed, Trantsizio, Abhinavan - play a vital role in enhancing the holistic and aesthetic development of a student’s personality and help stimulate interest in various subjects. The college also has a vibrant NCC Army and Airwing. Abhaya – the women’s forum works to spread awareness about the issues related to girls and women and organizes various programmes and sessions on several topics and causes like ‘Sexual abuse of minors and the importance of counselling’, cleanliness and hygiene, Interfaith dialogue, Charity Drives, Hair Donation Drive, and celebrates Elder’s Day, Girl Child Day, Womanhood, Constitution Day etc to bring about societal change. Counselling services, catechism and value education classes mould the character of the students and help develop a strong moral and ethical sense among the students. Trained personnel are invited to guide the students in the areas of personality development, career guidance, life skills, family life, AIDS awareness, communal harmony, human rights, social concern etc.
Mother Aloysia realized that women have a significant contribution to make in all aspects of our national life. This vision has inspired the students to go on to make a mark in the world of medicine, politics, administration, law, sports and education etc. The college fosters a bond with the alumni through Agnosphere. The management, staff and students are committed to the mission of education and work together to secure exceptional results and set exemplary standards for a value based education that promotes integrity, social responsibility and confidence. Regular sessions are conducted on strategies to improve the performance of weak students. They are also provided extra coaching to achieve effectual academic outcomes. The PTA renders service through cooperative relationship between parents and teachers.
To develop the personality of the students and harness their in-depth potential, many activities like FRESCO – an interactive session with high school students, EXORDIUM - Fresher’s Day, Ethnic Day, Sports Day, Vanmahotsav, Beach Cleanup, Students’ Day, Teachers’ Day, Hindi Day, Master Chef, Yoga Day, Achievers’ Day, College Day, Cultural Extravaganza, La Gloria to celebrate academic success, AGNATHON – A National Level Interschool and Intercollegiate Competitions and leadership training and self defence training programmes are conducted. Important days like Independence Day, Republic Day, Hindi Day, and Karnataka Rajyothsava are also commemorated.
St Agnes PU College also encourages its students to participate in various intercollegiate competitions in order to help them develop an integrated personality and their girls are the recipients of several awards at the regional, national and international level in various sporting disciplines. The college has excellent teams in diverse sports like table tennis, volleyball, throwball, basketball, handball, floorball, wrestling, karate, badminton etc and they deserve top accolades. Financial aid and scholarships are disbursed to deserving students, meritorious students, state and national level sports achievers.
Affinity Towards Less Fortunate
Outreach programmes are organized for students in order to cultivate a sense of social responsibility. The proceeds from the sale of various items during the Christmas carnival were used for charity and it is aimed at nurturing the altruistic aspect in students and to help them realize the happiness of giving.
