Beltangady, Feb 19: A minor boy sustained injuries when a plastic-wrapped explosive device, suspected to be a crude trap for wild animals, detonated in the courtyard of a house in Beltangady on February 18.
According to a complaint filed by Jayashree (38), a resident of Beltangady, the incident occurred while her two children were playing in the courtyard in the evening. The children discovered a ball-shaped plastic bundle lying on the ground. As they began playing with it, the object suddenly exploded with a loud noise and smoke.

Fragments from the device struck one of the boys, causing minor injuries to his leg. The injured child was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Preliminary inquiries and an inspection of the explosive material suggest that the device was a crude explosive, commonly referred to as a "pig bomb," planted by miscreants for hunting wild animals. It is suspected that stray dogs might have picked up the device and dropped it in the residential courtyard.
The Dharmasthala police have registered a case (Cr No: 09/2026) under Section 9(B)(1)(b) of the Explosives Act 1884 and Section 125(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. Further investigation is underway to identify those responsible for planting the dangerous explosive.
