Meghalaya MP Ricky Syngkon passes away at 54

Shillong, Feb 19: Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon, one of Meghalaya’s two Lok Sabha members, passed away on Thursday evening, February 19, 2026, following a cardiac arrest. He was 54.

Syngkon reportedly collapsed while playing football in Mawiong on the outskirts of Shillong. He was immediately rushed to a missionary hospital, but doctors were unable to revive him.

A giant-killer in Meghalaya politics, Syngkon had denied Vincent H. Pala a fourth consecutive term from the Shillong parliamentary constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He had contested on a ticket from the Voice of the People Party.

Before entering active politics, Syngkon served as an assistant professor of Economics at North-Eastern Hill University. He had resigned from his academic post to contest the 2024 general elections.

His sudden demise has sent shockwaves across Meghalaya, with leaders and supporters expressing grief over the untimely loss.
