Udupi: Accident victim gives life to 6 by organ donation in Kasturba Hospital Manipal

Udupi, Feb 27: Koderi Shilpa Madhav, a road accident victim has given life to six patients by donating her organs. The accident occurred at 1.30 pm on February 25 at Maravanthe, Byndoor Taluk, Udupi district.

Koderi Shilpa Madhav, 44, a resident of Uppunda, Byndoor taluk and wife of Prasanna Kumar was severely injured and admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal for further treatment on February 25 at 4.58 PM.

Despite the doctors' efforts to salvage her, the prognosis was poor and she did not show any signs of recovery. She was declared brain dead by a panel of expert doctors as per the protocol stipulated by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 officially twice.

The first was at 6.29 pm on February 26 and the second at 1.35 am on February 27. Subsequently, Shilpa Madhav’s husband, Prasanna Kumar and his family members expressed their willingness to donate her viable organs to save other needy patients' lives.

As per Jeevasarthakathe, SOTTO, Bengaluru protocols and decisions, Liver was sent to Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, while a kidney was sent to A J Hospital, Mangaluru for registered patients and another kidney, corneas and skin were retained by Kasturba Hospital Manipal for registered patients and this cause helped save lives of 6 people.

Husband and family members of Koderi Shilpa Madhav, expressed that, “Organ donation is a noble cause and Shilpa has committed a great deed even in her death."

Medical Superintendent Dr Avinash Shetty said, “Koderi Shilpa Madhav family’s decision to donate her organs shows the changing mindset of people in this noble cause. This is a welcome change and needs to be emulated by many people.”  

The harvested organs were transferred to the recipient hospital with the support of the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada Police Department from Manipal to Mangaluru via green corridor.

    It’s indeed a noble deed by The family. What about the hospitals. Does it implant these organs for free. I am afraid it will do so. We all know what these hospitals do. There is no value for human life.

    I don’t agree with family giving consent. While getting drivers license they should add a question to be an organ donor and the will of the person should be carried out. There is too much pressure on family and Doctors for organ harvesting. While it’s noble cause, the life and rights of the poor and vulnerable population should be protected. It’s a slippery slope.

    Very noble deed . Om Shanti - May her soul rest in peace But Govt should step in and also help lower income class people. So many good deeds i have come across at recent times but the needy patients are always in Aster , Apollo , Fortis etc I wish I could hear one day that need that needy patient is in Wenlock , District hospital
