Mumbai, Jul 23: A Mumbai police officer has been suspended after a video went viral showing him threatening students who were protesting for the resignation of union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET exam irregularities. The officer allegedly threatened to frame the students in a fake drug case and ensure they end up in jail.
For the past few days, a large number of students and citizens have been staging protests at prominent locations across the city, including Shivaji Park, Chembur, and Azad Maidan. Following the widespread outrage over the video, the police officer has been removed from his post, and a rigorous investigation into the incident has been ordered.
The video shows the officer speaking aggressively to the students, who were peacefully demanding the resignation of the union minister over the NEET paper leak and exam discrepancies. While making the students sit inside a police van, the officer can be heard threatening them, saying, "I will plant 50 grams of drugs in your pocket and book a case against you. You will not even get bail. There is no one worse than me. If you are seen here again, I will make your life hell."
The Mumbai Congress shared the video of the threat on X (formerly Twitter), strongly condemning the police action. "The police threatened students with filing a case by keeping drug powder in their pockets. Is this the modus operandi of the Mumbai police and NCB officials? Has the NCB been registering cases in this manner all along?" the party questioned.
Further criticising the system, the Mumbai Congress stated, "In a state where the home minister of the country himself was once exiled, some police officers are more powerful in creating fear than upholding the law. A police officer with this kind of mindset is a black mark on the entire police force. A comprehensive investigation must be conducted to find out how many innocent youths this policeman has framed in false cases by issuing such threats during his tenure. He should be suspended immediately, and strict action must be taken against him."
