Udupi: Rat fever spreading its tentacles in district

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Nov 14: At a time when malaria, dengue and coronavirus infection cases have been showing a steady declining trend, rat fever cases are rising. Between January and September this year, 173 rat ever cases were reported. 85 of them were from Udupi taluk, 54 from Kundapur taluk and 34 from Karkala taluk. Till October end, 203 such cases were detected.

In January 559 people were tested, and 24 showed symptoms of this fever. As many as 26 people were infected in February, 23 more in March, five in May, 11 in June, 32 in July and 25 in August. In September, the highest number of 34 cases were reported. Among them, 17 were from Udupi taluk with 11 cases from Kundapur and six from Karkala suffering from this fever. In 2018, 330 cases were found and 344 in 2019. Compared to these two years, however, the cases this time are much less.

This fever normally spreads through the urine and stools of the rats. Usually, farmers who visit the fields for harvesting paddy crops get infected. During the four months of lockdown, the cases were minimal.

Dakshina Kannada

The district reported 111 rat fever cases from January till now. A death also occurred due to rat fever in August. As people avoided going out because of the coronavirus pandemic, cases seem to have fallen sharply. Moreover, when the ASHA workers visited houses to create awareness about coronavirus, they also talked about dengue and rat fever. District surveillance officer, Dr Jagadish K, feels that this would have resulted in a steep fall in the cases.

Precautions

Water should be consumed after boiling. People should not take bath in standing water as excreta and urine of animals might have contaminated that water. Care should be taken to ensure that food items, fruits, vegetables etc are not accessible to rats. All holes, cracks etc in houses, godowns, drains, fields etc should be sealed to destroy the rats and carcasses of rats should be properly disposed of. It is better if gum boots are worn when visiting farms, cattle sheds, agricultural fields etc. If someone works in slush or standing water, they should take bath in hot water.

Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda, Udupi district health officer, says that fever occurs when viruses from the discharges of rats enter the human body. Rat fever should be treated at its initial stage. Enough stock of medicines for rat fever is available in all the primary health centres, he says. Udupi district has not witnessed any death due to this disease, he mentioned.

It's not caused by a virus as reported but by bacteria! It's commonly known as leptospirosis!
Since it's symptoms mimic diseases like dengue malaria flue etc difficult to diagonise!

Be aware of how you can contract rat-bite fever. Rat-bite fever is passed from rats to humans through the rat’s saliva, urine, or feces. You can contract this disease by receiving a bite or scratch from a rat or by coming into contact with something (like food) that has been contaminated with rat urine or feces. There are two forms of rat-bite fever. Streptobacillus moniliformis: This disease is most commonly passed via a rat’s saliva. This form of rat-bite fever is found in North America.
Spirillum Minus: The bacteria found in this form of rat-bite fever also causes a disease called Haverhill Fever. It is most commonly found in Asia.
Look for symptoms of streptobacillary rat-bite fever. As listed above, streptobacillary rat-bite fever is caused by the streptobacillus moniliformis bacteria. Symptoms of this kind of fever become visible three to ten days after exposure to an infected rodent but can be delayed for as long as three weeks. Symptoms may include- Fever: When your body senses foreign bacteria, it elevates your internal temperature to kill off the bacteria. This elevated temperature is what we call a fever.
Muscle pain: The area around the bite or scratch might become swollen, and the muscles around the area might feel sore or achy.
Rash: You might notice flat, red bumps on your arms and legs. This rash generally appears two to four days after the fever starts.
Nausea and vomiting. Headache. Clean the bite or scratch as soon as you notice it. Go to the hospital after you have cleaned the bite.

Thank you all for reading, and please be careful and healthy.

Page Content. Rat-bite fever is a disease that occurs in humans who have been bitten by an infected rat or, in some cases, squirrels, mice, cats, and weasels. On occasion, the disease can also be spread by the ingestion of contaminated food or milk products. Also any stored food, canned food, vegetables, fruits, and even rice.
    1. Lay down rat poison.
    2. Set rat traps.
    3. Prevent rat infestations from occurring. If you are concerned that you may have more than one or two rats living in your house, or if you don’t have rats and really don’t want them to be attracted to your house, make your house as unpleasant for a rat as possible.
Dispose of your trash properly. Spoiled foods must be properly disposed and trash cans should be kept sealed at all times to avoid attracting rodents.
Block up any potential entrances that rats could enter your house through. Any holes in the doors, walls, or screens of your house should be sealed up to keep rodents out.
    4. Keep your food covered. Either store your food in locked containers or keep your food in the fridge. Make sure that the containers have a lid that seals well. Covering food with plastic sheets or tin foil isn’t a good idea because rats can easily bite through the paper or tin foil and infect your food.
Do not keep any food outside, like in your garage or in your backyard, because it will most likely attract rats. Clean all your cans and tins. Most canned goods are stored in storage units that rats can get into. These rodents may urinate or defecate on the cans. While the food inside the cans is still safe, it is important to wash the cans before you open them so that the bacteria left behind by the rats get washed away. Wash the cans with warm water for two to three minutes before you open them. Avoid drinking unpasteurized milk. Wash your hands regularly and maintain good hygiene. Avoid bathing in or drinking contaminated water. Contact a vet if your pet rat is acting strangely or seems sick.
