Fr Mahesh suicide: 200-page final investigation report puts an end to rumours

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Editor's note: The unnatural death of Fr Mahesh D'Souza was shocking and unfortunate. The events that happened in the aftermath of his death were also equally shocking. Daijiworld as responsible media carried a series of articles on this matter. A few readers questioned the authenticity of our reports, and accused us of being 'biased'. We accept the criticism in the right spirit. Unfortunately, we could not make everyone happy. But we have been constantly urged by thousands of our readers from all over the world for a conclusive report so as to put an end to the speculations regarding the exact reason behind Fr Mahesh's death. Perhaps, for the first time in the history of Daijiworld, a death case has attracted this level of curiosity. To answer everyone's questions, we have decided to publish articles in series, without taking any sides and only based on the FINAL report submitted by the investigation officer to the court. Daijiworld has no personal interest in this report, but as media we need to cater to the needs of our readers who have been following the case closely right from day one of Fr Mahesh's death and entreating us to publish a detailed report.

Udupi, Mar 20: Over five months after the death of Fr Mahesh D'Souza, former principal of Don Bosco School, Shirva, the final investigation report submitted by investigation officer and Kaup circle inspector Mahesh Prasad, who is widely respected as an upright officer in the department, has revealed some hitherto unknown sides of Fr Mahesh D'Souza and brought an end to the several speculations and rumours spread across the world among the community members and others.

The 200-plus page final investigation report on the unnatural death, a copy of which is in possession of Daijiworld through Right-to-Information (RTI) Act, mentions detailed statements by over 95 witnesses including bishops, priests, entrepreneurs, family members and friends of Fr Mahesh as well as other related persons.

After his death, four mobile phones belonging to Fr Mahesh had been confiscated, and it was revealed that Fr Mahesh had tried to commit suicide at least three times in the past. He was asked to leave the seminary in 1999 by SVD congregation in Kirem as he was habitually spending excessively and borrowing money from others. He later joined the diocesan seminary, but in 2007 he was asked to correct his behaviour and lifestyle, and sent away to pursue BEd. It is reported that he changed his behaviour, and rejoined the seminary again in 2009 with a much-improved attitude and renewed commitment.

Nevertheless, the post-death investigation reveals shocking transcripts of his chats with five different women, including a non-Christian married woman, from 2015 to until his last day. The chat content is explosive, highly unbecoming of a priest, according to the report.

The report gives clean chit to Shirva parish priest, assistant parish priest and a former teacher of Don Bosco school who was suspected to have written an anonymous letter to Fr Mahesh's parents, Bishop and all the priests laying the blame on the character of the deceased priest.

In one instance, the investigation report reveals that there were financial irregularities as Fr Mahesh collected donations from 9 different people for the school building but never deposited the money in the school's account, and instead credited it to his personal account in a Shirva bank.

There are several mentions of hospitalisation of Fr Mahesh due to various reasons. In fact, he had voluntarily joined Naturopathy therapy at the Ayurveda centre in Dharmasthala to lose weight.

According to the post-mortem report: "Deceased died due to asphyxia as a result of the constriction of neck structures by a ligature."

The RFSL report says: "...Analyses have not responded for the presence of residues of ethyl alcohol, volatile poisons, pesticides, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, toxis metal ions and anions in all above-stated articles."

The investigation report on the post-mortem further clears doubts as to how the priest's legs were touching the ground, and the position of the rope across the neck.

"The death occurred at least 8-14 hours before the post-mortem, there was no single clue of resistance by the deceased. There were no perligature marks on the body, so it is concluded that the death occurred due to suicide," states the report.

During the investigation, a few witnesses had alleged that Fr Mahesh did not share a cordial relationship with the parish priest, however, the majority of witnesses stated that there were not many problems between them. An NRI entrepreneur who was also one of the witnesses stated that Fr Mahesh and the parish priest had visited his house to discuss some plans relating to the school. On October 7, 2019, they came together and actively participated in the discussion and both looked jovial. Fr Mahesh drove the car. Moreover, the parish priest who was in Kuwait at the time of Fr Mahesh's death, exchanged cordial chats on WhatsApp a few minutes before the suicide and also exchanged a photo of a programme in Kuwait and of a programme that took place during the daytime in Don Bosco School.

It may be recalled that Mudarangady gram panchayat president David D'Souza has been arrested in the case on charges of instigating Fr Mahesh to commit suicide. The report and chat transcripts mention that Fr Mahesh and a lady named Priya had a close relationship. David had warned the priest at least three times in the past. Angered that Fr Mahesh had ignored his warning, David reportedly threatened to disclose his alleged misdeeds to the public by ringing the church bell. David is still in judicial custody, and has reportedly applied for bail through the high court.

More details to be published in the next part.

Fr. Mahesh, your good works, your preaching will not be forgotten. Your service to the Lord and His people will not be forgotten. We may have lost Fr. Mahesh from this world, but his memories will remain in our hearts and minds. Especially of those he taught in his school, thousands of school children will remember you forever. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him, May Fr. Mahesh’s soul rest in peace.

A vital aspect of the investigation should have been - Why was CCTV switched off that evening by a school staff and later he went home. That person (Johnson) has not been reprimanded or questioned. Is he a missing link? is a part of the conspiracy? I say this because CCTV would have given the truth clearly and investigations could have solved various assumptions, presumptions, loopholes and hypothesises.
Why has he has left the job now?

Fr Mahesh tragic death raises many hypothesis, there are vested interest who desire an early closure of the case... this certainly raises suspicion, there are more questions then answers !!! My firm belief, is to hand over the case to our premier investigating agency in our nation....the CBI to finally unravel this mysterious death of a good priest !!!!

    Just a thought!

When we found ourselves “alone” at home, God is with us.

When we celebrate a occasion — “alone" , the love and affection of our loved ones, still enwrap us.

When people die “alone”, their good deeds and many merits are with them.

And when people are buried “alone,” scores of angels accompany them from this world to the next.

I personally feel priest should avoid commenting on this forum negatively even after the report is in the open. what does Fr. Roque wants to convey to the catholic people? Looks like he is only preaching and not put them in to practise. Why cant he go to the Bishop and put his concerns forward and have a good read at the 200+ pages report. This will make him feel very good. Now he has realised the departed souls feel injury and insult. What about the living people who have been brutally insulted and injured by fake videos, whatzup FB etc. ? Are you afraid Fr. Roque there will be more worms from the can will be out of your dear friend Fr. Mahesh?

These people are sweet talkers & are successful in manipulating those who believe in "blind faith"; these people influence these blind followers to shun & demoralize people who stand up for the truth!
Believe me, I know of so many people who have joined other sects after seeing with their own eyes what really is happening behind the curtains!

Justice is delivered, now why the same people are hesitating to openly admit that they were wrong.
It will be their greatness if they show that they are in favour of truth, however shocking and bitter it might be....only then God will forgive us for the injustice done to his annointed priests and show mercy on us and on our land ....

Such dubious activities are indulged in by people who are fattened by wealth & have lots of free time; the poor & downtrodden would never entertain such thoughts neither would they be entertained! The main culprit here is money; anyone who has access to excess money indulge in such activities! Can you imagine a man who is considered as a shepherd owning 4-5 smart phones when many from the laity are struggling to make both ends meet!

During November 2019, so many fake messages and audio's were in circulation, so also FB judgements, because of the blind faith the people had in in the deceased. Some with hidden agenda seem to have taken advantage of the ignorant people.

Now when the investigation is complete, and people have realised the truth, why isnt this factual report of Daiji being circulated with the same zest and zeal?

Admitting and accepting the truth is also a great act of charity during the Holy Week and only God can forgive us for doing injustice the Bishop, Parish Priest and Asst. Parish Priest in our ignorance and because we were carried away by the evil ones. We should be open enough to seek forgiveness and claim blessings on us and our families.

    Dear Readers,
The Daijiworld news-panel with late Fr Mahesh’s photo and analysis of the Investigation Report is still kept alive even after 15 days. It has received more than 245 feedbacks. My own review has received 40 odd feedbacks. Since it is a public forum and all being free to express their views, I thought it proper to maintain silence so far. Yesterday, Jerome of Karkala opined: “hope Fr Roque D’Souza has taken our views, comments & reactions constructively” I say yes to it.

Also thank all who offered their views to my review on the subject. Though some of them border on ‘character assassination’, I need not be apologetic. As priests, we must expect these days lot of negative criticism. These are testing and purifying times for the local Church and in particular for us priests.
I have one more request with the DAIJIWORLD. They have noted the publication of more details in the next part that has not yet come. I wonder, if it is proper now especially when we are focusing on the Passion of Our Lord and the COVID-19!! There are also other organs highlighting analysis on the Investigation Report. If Daijiworld comes out with further parts on the subject, let it not be highlighted with the PHOTO of late Fr Mahesh on the panel. It would be improper to overuse (abuse!) his photo for seeking attention, thus promoting insult to injury to a departed soul. I see, there are already camps for and against the Investigation Report as there were before. Where will it all lead to? We must seek the amelioration of our Church and our society as responsible Christians and Citizens. Excuse me for being preachy.
    Thanks. Fr Roque D'Souza

Dear friends, I hope Fr Roque Dsouza has taken our views, comments & reactions constructively.
Now as the report is known to us, its time to analyse the opinion of Rev Fr. Francis Lewis, St.Francis Xavier Church, Mudarangadi too (Pls see his comment of 14th oct, to Suicide news published by daiji). Many were quick in expressing anguish at the way such a SENIOR PRIEST had reacted! Being a close friend of BOTH Fr. Mahesh & David, we never expected such comments from him, and glorification of the act of suicide. WHAT IS THE MESSAGE THE YOUTH ARE SUPPOSED TO DRAW FROM HIS COMMENTt? We know that the majority of the priests and religious are hurt and pained because of the way things have been exposed. Many have commented that they too are human coming from families, so WE as laymen and heads of our own families have a GREATER RESPONSIBILITY OF CORRECTING THEM WHEN THEY ARE WRONG.
Let me quote some of Fr Francis Lewis words and may be we can debate on it. Fr. Francis being a jovial person, I know will take it in the right spirit:

    1. Sadly, a quote of St Mother Theresa did not fit there in his comment as she refers to natural death.
    2. ".....When I think of those last few hours of Fr Mahesh, the words of Winston Churchill come to my mind, “I am ready to meet my Maker.. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter”…. Fr Mahesh embraced death because death seemed so beautiful to him. It is to lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above his head and listen to silence. It is to have no yesterday and no tomorrow. It is to forget time, to forget life, to be at peace… Dear Fr Mahesh, your death reveals that you were not afraid to die. Your life was so beautiful that death fell in love with it. A Beautiful Novel of your life ended abruptly shattering the dreams of your family members."

Fr, now WE TOO know why Fr Mahesh died and as his friends, if he was guided & corrected, may be the 3rd attempt could have been foiled?

Fr. Francis Lewis - You are not practising what you preach. You are glorifying your friend's death. What kind of priests we are having ? I can smell jelousiness from his comments towards fellow priests. Be a true Christian and be a guiding model for others rather than instigating hatred among Catholics. You did not save your friend when he was alive and you are not doing any justice to him when he is dead.

Truth is bitter. Today the ones who went against the senior priests and Bishop doesn't want to accept the truth and their defeat in prooving as per their doubts.

    - Rather than gossiping, why cant one provide proofs for what they claim?
    - earlier reports and videos srfaced on social media , said money laundering etc by senior preists etc. Why cant they do audit and check the truth if it was so?
-Now there are witnesses from so many, including who supported Mahesh, Why couldn't they show their chats between them and Mahesh where they say the senior priest is at fault. Was it that Fr. Mahesh shared those issues only with those ladies?
-A responsible Princpal/ Headmaster will not share adminstartive issues he is facing to any Tom-dick&Haryy. If we read the chats he shared with girls regarding his adminstartive aspects, it doesn't show any maturity. It looks like show off, attention seeking
-Also if it was only chats related to doing wedding mass my Mahesh, they why the messages on that day between them were deleted by the lady? On what fear? They could have showed those messages and could avoid her husbands arrest right

Sadly every religious leader is a human and it is human nature to sin. Some of them are morally strong and the rest arent so strong. It also needs to be seen why he chose to become a priest in the first place. Was he willing or forced into it? If people are forced into priesthood because of family, poverty or any other reason apart from sense of service, then they are likely to take up the wrong path. This is something the church needs to actually look at, so that the future priests are better.

WHAT was his role when there were protests? As the vice president he was supposed to actively help the parish priest and asst parish priest.
If he wanted to be neutral or oppose what was the need to be the vice president? Or was there any hidden agenda which is still existent? This calls for real thinking by the parishioners and catholics of Udipi Diocese. After all we catholics have to pray love and show our unity.

It was impossible that such multiple affairs of the victim were hidden from most of the parishioners, but for obvious reasons they were being suppressed, and those who wanted to expose the truth were marked as traitors; but, the suppression of facts could not have gone on for long, and finally the bubble got burst after the threshold limit was crossed; and the final result is in front of all! Now, you think & decide what's going on behind the curtains!!

@Shelma Saldanha Bangalore ,here we dont have doubts about Post mortum report from Police officers. No we still are shocked to know the facts.and it makes one still unbelievable. It will take some time to digest it.and feel sorry too such a dedicated priest who walked out of his teaching and preaching ,instead of his original priestly living. He too is a human ,we pray now may God forgive him for his faults ,sins, and give eternal rest. I feel some women, that too married ones made him easy ,to commit sins?instead of concentrating in their married life .Other side Heads of catholic church should have expelled him as soon as they came to know about his character and deeds so that no further he can continue what he was doing.Or they didnt know anything? Why they kept him in office still? So he had a free hand to commit sins and atlast suicide was the only way out to him?

So much discussion is going on in Daijiworld after the publication of final investigation report.
In the background of this report the following questions bother me:
    1. Why did the family make a U-turn from closing the death issue to police investigation? Who coaxed them?
    2. Why did the case get a political twist? Was there any personal agenda of politicians at the local level? Did the faithful become victims of partisan politics?
    3. Could there be deeper reasons as to why a criminal case was filed against some of the protestors in Shirva? Did they have any other personal agenda? Why did they oppose Fr Denis? Did they have real interest about Fr Mahesh or their own personal gain?
    4. Was the money given by the donors for the cause of the school truly utilised for school project as desired by well wishers?
I hope some day these questions will be answered.

Firstly thanks daiji for non-bias journalism. I know both Fr. Dr Roque and Late Fr Mahesh personally and closely for 5-6 years. Now coming to the whole subject, no doubt matter could had handled in better way considering the magnanimity of the situation. It is evident from Fr.Dr Roque’s comments that there is trust deficit between Bishop and clergymen of Udupi diocese. Several incidents that are mentioned on the police report that resulted to suicide of Mahesh demands answers from various parties. A) What corrective action did bishop take when allegations were made by Mr.David with regards to Late Mahesh’s character. B)Why church authorities did not act with diligence when there were 3 previous attempts for suicide by Mahesh? Why complaint was not filed with police as attempts to commit suicide is crime under IPC. C)Did the family of Mahesh were aware of his suicidal attempts? Or this is completely new revelation to them?
I believe if the above questions were answered correctly, the dead and the one who are living will be in peace!

There will be no confession and no Gods call. Do you think after watching, reading story of Fr. Mahesh anyone would want to become priest? Will the people have any respect for priest? i doubt very much. They will watch every priest with doubtful eyes.

Need of the hour is to build faith with catholic community

It is spirtually taught that satan attacks priests the most so that faithful loose faith on confessions, holy mass, makes oneself doubt priests...this case is one of the fine example.

Love, joy, peace, self-control, patience, forgiveness, gentleness, kindness, humility, godliness, holiness, charity, justice, mercy, heaven, freedom... comes from God.

Lust, pride, anger, envy, unforgiveness, hatred, jealousy, selfishness, greed, gluttony, addictions, attachments, Terror, destroying good, injustice, harassment, hell, slavery... comes from evil.

Mother Mary said God's will be done for all to overcome the satan. All the above Negative thoughts, emotions and temptations are common to humans beings. Everyone love them to surrender to God and overcome them with the help of God, as God is Love. 1John4:8.

If your faith, religious practice and values depend on the behavior people / priests around you, you need to question your own integrity. Over the past 2000 years, there have been thousands of rotten priests, bishops and popes. The Christianity has survived all that. Life of Fr.Mahesh should not force anyone to turn their back on the religion. Agree that his suicide and allegations are not quite the motivational stuff. However, there are hundreds of committed, selfless and holy priests in our midst too if you wish to take inspiration. Rise above the 'drama' and take hold of your own life.

It’s very evident that the official statement from Udupi diocese on Sunday 21st March 2020 was not called for while the investigation report had just come out and people were yet to read and understand the findings.
The official message indirectly conveys that’s anyone can come into the church compound and threaten our priest and they will be protected. Irrespective of the situation or any wrong doing how can someone enter the church compound and threaten a priest leading to death. What was the leadership doing...? why was a complaint not filed if there were any wrong doing? The law of the land is same for all.
In conclusion, the statement should have touched upon some corrective actions that will be taken from learnings of this incident and also worded much better. It’s hard to believe that all is well...!
We need to take care of our priest in a much better way. One common observation is that all through out this incident could have been handled much better.

    Fr Roque Dsouza,
Though I do not know you personally, I know that you are a learned priest. So, I expected a statement with deeper reflections and not merely spritualizing the entire issue.

In 6th point you say, "I wonder if the statement by the diocese does justice to Fr Mahesh". I am of the opinion that the statement of the bishop is truly fair towards late Fr Mahesh.

Unfortunately, forget about justice, hardly any charity is shown towards Fr Denis, Fr Ashwin and the real mourners of Shirva parish who silently suffered every single abuse in the hands of those people who went for cheap publicity. And because of these fake people who were shedding crocodile tears today the respect Fr Mahesh deserved is thrown to trash cans.

Some of rhe priests with biased views took side of the unruly protestors.

Now all those who protested and all those who took side with them should be held responsible for the present state of affairs.

It is not a fair game when people like you (instead of being impartial) continue to defend the dead instead of consoling the whole lot who have gone through nightmares. First show your empathy to the living.

After a long time a priest has come out with a statement regarding this issue, it wouldn't have become so complicated if all priest had United and handled this sensitive issue. Here the big loss is for Fr.Mahesh parents, who have lost their son and will grieve till the end of their life and the rest , it looks to me as if they have used this issue just to tarnish the image of the other person. It is indeed sad to read the report. But why was it said by one of the priest , just after 2 days of Fr Mahesh Death that he committed suicide do to the transfer order. Where is the transfer order? When bishop had not given it , nor any official order regarding the same. Who had given him the authority to publish in Daijiworld? Why is that priest silent! Shame on him ,such an educated and spiritual person commiting sin. Secondly the priest who was responsible for instigating the stree sangatan Ladies to protest in Shriva against the Bishop and Parish priest is a sheer shameful act for being responsible for creating violence within our community, don't you feel this too is tarnishing the character of someone and is sin Fr.Rocque. Every one of us commit mistakes , Fr. Mahesh is also a human being, he should have left priesthood and I feel if he was supported on time .This wouldn't have happened. Rest in pece Fr .Mahesh.

    Spiritually speaking,
In the Bible, Moses was a murderer, David was a adulterer, Peter denied Jesus thrice also St Augustine was a womaniser and gambler inspite of all this God chose them to lead the flock, Why? They had sought and beseeched God's mercy to come back mightily after their change in life.

Best thing is that said priest could have sought God mercy instead of listening to self or threat of others and changed his life. May God have mercy on his soul.

Best thing is that said Priest might have got saved from fires of hell, because of the prayers of faithful and clergy.

Recent past so many have committed suicides without confessions. As their pain and suffering now God only knows, God to use him for confessions of those wandering souls who are in pain and suffering ?? They could be our brethren, friends, near and dear ones known persons, for whom hardly anyone praying about. Dead are easily forgotten.

    Part III
    7. You say “Parish Priest of Shirva and Bishop of Udupi were unduly accused, yes. However, many point out that after the death of Fr Mahesh, if the case was sensitively handled with more openness, things would not have gone that far”. Here again you are referring to the “many point out”! Being one of the seniors, it was for you to take the lead and stop the many from saying such things and giving suggestions to the bishop as to how(in the middle of a police investigation, without causing interruption to investigation,) it should be sensitively handled.
    8. You say “We must have some empathy for Fr Mahesh. As a young priest, he might have erred and fallen in a few instances. But he was kind, gentle and generous as a dedicated priest. The media and public are prone to exaggerate and easily accuse. We cannot hold him as a culprit and disown him now. Which of us is without sin?” Except that he was young, all other qualities that you have listed are questionable. Read that he was asked to leave the SVD, read that he was asked to take a break, so it is not a few instances. Of course, in this big bad world each one us has a Fr. Mahesh in us, but the gravity may vary.:-) So, we would have accepted Fr. Mahesh, with all his weaknesses, and forgotten all his shortcomings of adultery, misuse of funds, his luxurious life style and never uttered a word about it, as he too is human and comes from a family. The chats, the videos, bank accounts would have died down with the investigation report and nobody would have bothered to get a copy of the 1580 pages of detailed report plus 202 pages of summary under RTI. At least he would not have been stripped of the name and respect he had earned from the unassuming students, their parents & the innocent people after his death. We must recall that he was given a befitting funeral and there was an attempt by bishop to protect his shortcomings. Because, he actually gave his life for saving his “NAME”. (contd on Part IV)

1When we make allegations on the departed persons, we must be extremely mindful, as they cannot defend themselves.
2 Character assassination of anyone, especially of the dead ones is a grave sin.
3 Investigation Report may shed some light, but its objectivity may be contested even in law courts
4 If parties plan to settle scores based on this Report, it would again erupt into community unrest. Currently due to Corona-virus lock down, things may be subdued.
5 Parish Priest of Shirva and Bishop of Udupi were unduly accused, yes. However, many point out that after the death of Fr Mahesh, if the case was sensitively handled with more openness, things would not have gone that far.
6 We must have some empathy for Fr Mahesh. As a young priest, he might have erred and fallen in a few instances. But he was kind, gentle and generous as a dedicated priest. The media and public are prone to exaggerate and easily accuse. We cannot hold him as a culprit and disown him now. Which of us is without sin? I wonder, if the Statement by the diocese does justice to Fr Mahesh!
7 Let us see the main events and persons around Jesus’ tragic death: Judas betrayed, Peter disowned the Master, crowds demanded Jesus’ crucifixion, Pilot passed the judgment condemning Jesus and washed his hands not to hold him responsible. Yet, the fact is all these and all of us as sinners have crucified Jesus.
Jesus has borne the crucifixion for our redemption and forgiven us. Unless we too forgive one another, divine forgiveness will not be operative in us. I may sound pious, but these are our Christian roots of faith and approach to our life. Let us not ignore them. Thanks

    Dear Father Roque,

With due respect to you and your priest brothers of Udupi diocese can I ask the following
    1) If you all knew the Clergy was not responsible then why none of the Priests including you express your thoughts earlier. Your voice would have been much credible.Justice delayed is Justice denied too.
    2) Was the Clergy in anyway responsible for the misdeeds of the deceased.
    3) Does the Udupi diocese have a template for a Priest to refer to in such dynamic and unfortunate situations which the Parish Priest or Assistant Parish Priest is guilty of violating.

Excellent comment by Fr Roque. My salute to him. Finally a priest open-up and express his opinion from heart. This is called democracy and true spirituality.

1When we make allegations on the departed persons, we must be extremely mindful, as they cannot defend themselves.
YES FATHER, YOU ARE RIGHT. THIS IS APPLICABLE RIGHT FROM THE DAY ONE OF HIS DEATH. WHEN HE IS NOT ALIVE, HOW FAIR PEOPLE TO CALL PRIEST AND BISHOP AS MURDERER? OR CALL BISHOP AS KUTHATHA, DOG? DID YOU OPEN YOUR LIP DURING THAT TIME OF CRISIS????

    2. 2 Character assassination of anyone, especially of the dead ones is a grave sin.
iI AGREE 100% FATHER, BUT DID YOU READ THE TRANSCRIPTS OF HIS CHAT WITH FIVE WOMEN? I READ, I GOT A COPY FROM INDIA. I AM ASHAMED!! . IF HE WAS ALIVE, HE WOULD HAVE COMITTED SUICIDE AGAIN!! PLEASE DO NOT DEFEND HIM. IF YOU READ FULL 202 PAGE REPORT, YOU WOULD NOT EXPRESS THIS OPINION FATHER

    3. 3 Investigation Report may shed some light, but its objectivity may be contested even in law courts
YES, PARTY HAS ALL THE RIGHT TO APPEAL FOR HIGHER COURT OR CBI OR CID, COD REPORT. BUT I FEEL CHAT CONTENT WILL NOT CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIVE WOMEN ..FIVE YEARS..TRULY UNBECOMING OF PRIEST, SPECIALLY CATHOLIC PRIEST

    4. 5 Parish Priest of Shirva and Bishop of Udupi were unduly accused, yes. However, many point out that after the death of Fr Mahesh, if the case was sensitively handled with more openness, things would not have gone that far.

100% TRUE. TOTAL FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP. AND EQUALLY TOTAL FAILURE OF PUBLIC RELATION POLICY OR INCHARGE WHOEVER IT IS. YOU HAVE VERY VALID POINT HERE. IF BISHOP HAD ADDRESSED SHIRVA PARISHIONERS SOON AFTER HIS DEATH, NO UNREST HAPPENED. I SUPPORT YOUR VIEWS. LEADERSHIP IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS FIASCO. PERHAPS VG IS ONE OF THE PARTY, BECAUSE HE IS THE ADVISOR TO BISHOP. BUT GOD WILL ANSWER, NOT LAY PERSON LIKE ME

But with your last point I do not go fully with you. During initial days me too taught the same way. After all it is how you analyse. The bishop too might have some restrictions. LAter I came to knoe that he cannot address this issue in public stating the reasons for the Suicide or whatsoever coz the Investagations where still on. This could hinder or effect future police investigations. Bishop too is in a higher position heading the flock. He too is not given this position thru influence but due to his ability

All due respect to Fr.Roque D'souza, here no one has accused innocent victim. He has committed adultry, used people donated funds and betryed hushands like David and 4 others . You did not comment when innocents were accused, I did not see any write up from any priest rather I heard some fellow priest were provking to parishioners to settle the score by jealousy. Ar you one of them?
Fr.Mahesh created shame for our community and top of that he committed suicide being principal of college. He has plenty people to defend him and they did, so the investigation went this long. It would have been a favor if had to leave preisthood instead committing suicide. Lets not glorify his wrong doing which will send wrong message to next generation. There are many good priest who sincerly work for community.

    1. The investigation report is the 'opinion; of one police officer, it can have lot of deficiencies and is not taken as it is in the court of law.
    2. As you have rightly pointed out, Fr. Mahesh is not there to defend himself. We can can lay allegations and become judgmental on a departed soul.
    3. The reactions here are on the report published here, have anyone read the entire report. Let us be careful before we pass adverse comments.

Then when the protestors or so called Shirva parishnors did to Bishop or the Senior Preist , where they not adverse? Did they have any proof for the allegations they put on them?

Its almost 6 months, why cant they furnish any proofs to raise their claim if the reason for Mahesh death is the senior preists or Bishops. Where those comments allegations or adverse?

People wanted justice, police enquiry, etc. And when truth has come out now no one wants to believe it true? Then what is Justice? Is it thrugh Whatsapp/ FB courts?

(Posting my response parts as it is bit long)
    Part I
    Dear Fr. Roque,
When I first saw your name in the comment, I was so very happy that finally, finally ONE SENIOR PRIEST of the Diocese has come forward to say something. But as I went through it, I realized, that like the Diocese Statement, it is another eyewash to cover up the deeds of the deceased and not to give life or justice to the ones who were actually victimized. Your internet was not working from November 2nd 2019 to March 22nd 2020, but at least you could use your phones and post a response, before waiting for the report to go into public domain? SPEAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME WOULD HAVE MADE AN IMPACT ON US. But better late than never and as somebody pointed out this is a democracy and we can have a healthy discussion, so let me counter your points.
    1. You say “When we make allegations on the departed persons, we must be extremely mindful, as they cannot defend themselves.”
BUT Fr, doesn’t the same advise apply to all, both dead and living. Baseless allegations were thrown from all directions and there didn’t appear to be any joint effort to calm the people, instead the PP and Asst PP were distanced by those who should have stood by them in their difficult times? Or is sermon here, applicable only to the lay persons like me who post comments? Though I am not in Shirva any more, I have my roots there and so fully aware of the happenings in and around Shirva.
    2. Please somebody list out the efforts put in by senior priests, bishop, committees and whatsapp groups to speed up the investigation, to convince the people not to bring more shame on the community and to behave like civilized crowd?
    (continued at Part II)

DisAgree [6] Agree [163] Reply Report Abuse

  • Nobby Dsouza, Bangalore

    Mon, Mar 23 2020

    Part II
    3. You say “Character assassination of anyone, especially of the dead ones is a grave sin”. Calling the anointed a “murderer” and calling the Bishop by names, allowing the rumours to spread, what category of sin is it? What action was taken to identify those who did that and advise them to act in true Christian spirit? There was nobody ready to listen to the PP, so other responsible leaders in the community could have taken over to do some damage control?
    4. You say “Investigation Report may shed some light, but its objectivity may be contested even in law courts” Here, I request you to apply for a copy of the full report under RTI, and then if he needs to be MORE FULLY EXPOSED, it can be VERY WELL contested. If you really were his well wisher and are concerned about the Diocese, you would never even have suggested this, as it is going to throw more muck on the clergy.
    5. You say “ If parties plan to settle scores based on this Report, it would again erupt into community unrest” When the community was REALLY AT GREAT UNREST, WHERE WERE THE LEADERS OF THE CHURCH? Instead ……
I did not see any press note or any efforts made in respective parishes to advise and preach the parishioners. Who created the parties? Now when the allegations are proved wrong, the lost name has to be given back to victimized priests, why to term it as “settle scores”. Or is there anything else between the lines?
    6. You say “Currently due to Corona-virus lock down, things may be subdued” after assassinating the PP and Asst. PP, now everybody wants to blame the virus. Actually, the spread of rumours, naming and shaming in audio, video and whatsapp msgs that became viral is nothing short of any virus and this is the only vaccine by which the clergy and laity will learn, so that both the unfortunate death and the unfortunate victimization does not repeat.
    (Continued at Part III)

    Mon, Mar 23 2020

    Part IV
BUT THE PEOPLE OF SHIRVA GOT LED BY FEW AND THEIR SUPPORTERS, THAT HAS MADE IT NECESSARY FOR THE PUBLIC TO KNOW THE FULL CONTENTS OF THE REPORT.
    9. You say “I wonder, if the Statement by the diocese does justice to Fr Mahesh! “ We need to think whether the statement has given justice to Fr.Mahesh, Fr. Denis Desa and Fr. Ashwin Aranha. Even if all anger, jealousy and hatred was aimed at Fr.Desa, there was one young newly ordained priest Fr. Ashwin, who was going through the same mental torture. How many priests and laymen have consoled him? Even though the fight was titled, justice for Fr. Mahesh, the ones who needed justice was PP and Asst. PP.
    10. Fr, I really like your point no. 7. Sadly, we will not be in church on Good Friday, to hear 3 voices of jesus, pilot and the people as the Gospel is being read. But since you have mentioned it, we have to name the characters applicable to this case.
    Like Judas, who betrayed….
    Like Peter who disowned….,
We know whose crucifixtion the crowds demanded
We know the many Pilots who passed the judgment and circulated it
We know who are the other Pilots who washed their hands
Yes, the fact is that all of us crucified one innocent person, and he has silently borne all that and I hope he can forgive us too. He is too straight forward, trieds to bring discipline, order and improvement, bold enough to call a spade a spade, and so is misunderstood. He is talented and has reached heights at young age so does not need to be jealous of anybody,

And Fr. Like you mentioned, we need to be really pious and practice our faith and roots in letter, word, spirit and deeds and not just appear to be so.

Mahesh is no more in this world, it is point less to discuss and pass opinions and judgement on the incident. We need to consider the state of mind of his immediate family members and the suffering and distress that has been left to them to go through which they would have not thought of in their lives. Let us be little more compassionate and pray for each other as one community and especially for our clergy and the religious leaders so that Lord will show His mercy on us and forgive us for our short comings.

Mahesh had survived his attempt (if true) to suicide and faced the world to tell the truth. There are a lot of wrong doings within the church ... Pope Francis has admitted and asked the faithful to pray for the church. If the priests are doing something wrong, then we as faithful people are also wrong in joining hands with such weakly placed priests. May the Lord God strengthen our faith by keeping his flock safe from transgressions and temptations so that incidents such as this do not tarnish the Church of Christ.

This is a police inquiry report and not a report of judicial inquiry. It has lot of deficiencies. It is based on the conclusion of one police officer who can be biased or influenced. His conclusions can not be always true. The witnesses are not cross examined to know the real truth. As commented by some one earlier, Fr.Mahesh could not deposit the cheques in his personal account unless they were drawn in his name. Who gave those cheques in his name? Has he used that money for any of his personal needs or he used it for the school? These facts could have known if the witness were cross examined by an advocate.

There can be entirely a different reason for the death of Fr. Mahesh. I am informed that his iphone, which he was using during his time of death is not opened. No one knows what is there in it. He was chatting with women as well as with men. Just chatting is not an offence or crime. The truth may be still a mystery. Let us not take this inquiry report as 'Bible Truth' and become judgmental.

How do you know the report is false? Were you also a partner in crime? If you knew the truth, why didnt you go as witnesses while the Police officer was investigating? Till the report was made public you people were asking for justice to Fr. Mahesh. Now the report has come, and you realized that instead of giving justice to him, you are responsible for spoiling the name of Fr. Mahesh. The way you guys took it forward to settle your scores with few individuals has back fired you and it is difficult for you to digest. If you really loved Fr. Jesus had said, “Whatever you say in the dark will be heard when it is day. Whatever you whisper in a closed room will be shouted from the housetops”

Let us believe that the words of Jesus came true in the life of Fr. Mahesh. Then what about our lives we all readers here ? including Bishops and Priests ?.

Again Jesus said, “When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."

We judged Fr. Mahesh while he is not alive to defend himself !. Still it is fine. But it is the time to judge ourselves all readers here whether we have no such greed for money or not, abnormal relationship with ladies, richness and luxury life i.e., cars and phones etc., and including Bishops and Priests ?

While Fr. Mahesh living, church could have admonished him and could have saved his life. Even birds or animals save their own fellow birds or animals while they are in critical conditions. Therefore, let us not make big fuss out of this report. Let us pray for Mr. Mahesh’s soul and his parents.

How you know that before taking that extreme step, he has not repented ?

Now it is the question of the living, you and me and not those who dead and gone !

Let us not judge the dead. We have plenty of time to repent ourselves!!

Therefore, we confess with Priests and Priests confess with some other Priests.

God is wise. There are no loopholes left in his wisdom.

It is strange that from day one of this tragic incident, it was projected that Fr. Mahesh's death was due to suicide only by the media, police statement and the church. There are many doubts/questions which are still unanswered. Hence Fr. Mahesh's death remains a mystery for Shirva parishioners except a handful few.

These are my reactions after reading the report.

People who made propaganda against the Bishop and parish priest should owe an unconditional apology. My feeling is that since Bishop and parish priest knew the drawbacks of Fr. Mahesh, they did not want to pursue the case. Now the people who were demanding the justice to Fr. Mahesh are responsible if Fr. Mahesh's credibility is lost. I feel sorry for Fr. Mahesh's mother who was made a scape goat by these activists for their selfish motives. Go and beg pardon with this lady who is still trying to recover from the shock of her son's death. Finally my request to the people who wanted to become heroes (females included), learn some manners to address the religious heads. Fr. Mahesh we will pray for your soul for sure.

yes. this comment is most credible one, to add further, its mass psychology, after any Incident. 1)People Imagine by their own way, they construct a theory about that incident 2) get curious or get Entertained by listening, talking about the incident. 3) Seek for inquiry/ Justice in fact they want to make sure what they thought is right, if the inquiry result is other way they wont accept because they stick to what they Initially thought is right, Example: Ministers Killed D.K Ravi, Boney kapoor Killed Sridevi.

"Nevertheless, the post-death investigation reveals shocking transcripts of his chats with five different women, including a non-Christian married woman, from 2015 to until his last day.

In one instance, the investigation report reveals that there were financial irregularities as Fr Mahesh collected donations from 9 different people for the school building but never deposited the money in the school's account, and instead credited it to his personal account in a Shirva bank."

    - ABOVE CONTENTS OF THE SELECT TEXT CLEARLY REMIND US 'TRUTH WILL ULTIMATELY PREVAIL'. PRAY & FORGIVE THE DECEASED PRIEST FOR HE TOO IS HUMAN. HENCEFORTH ALLOW THE PARISH PRIEST & OTHERS INCLUDING THE BISHOP TO LIVE IN PEACE. PUT TO REST GOSSIP. LEAVE THE COURTS TO DECIDE. PRAY FOR DAVID D'SOUZA TOO THAT JUSTICE MAY BE DONE TO HIM.

    - People should have taken the clue that something was seriously amiss when the "Parents of Fr Mahesh did not want to deliberate on his death and sully his image according to press reports. A request they made to the concerned authorities".

    - THE CASE OF FR MAHESH IS AN EYEOPENER TO THE PRESS, THE POLITICIANS & THE PEOPLE WHO GET HYPER WITHOUT WAITING FOR FACTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES TO COME OUT.

Here is Fr. Denis D'Sa's dilemma from my perspective. He had two choices in front of him:

    1. Reveal everything to the parishioners, which was an easy thing to do under the circumstances at the time. The result? The very parishioners that were clamouring for the "truth" would have shamed Fr. Denis for speaking ill about a deceased person.

    2. Maintain silence and let the evidence speak for itself. The result? Take a lot of flak from those very people.

Taking flak requires a lot of courage, maturity and patience. I personally would have been disappointed if Fr. Denis had chosen to take the easy route, although I would not have blamed him.

My hope and prayer is that time will heal the wounds. God bless us all...

I am aware legally he can not give any statement to public. If the Bishop had no knowledge i will withdraw my statement . Please Note i am RC and i know how good these catholic leaders help people.

    Regards

Please have the sense to realise or ask somebody that when any investigation is on, the ones who are being treated as 'accused'(in this case the Bishop and the PP) by the masses( for reasons best known to them) cannot give any clarification or issue statements which can affect the investigation. People took advantage of the silence of the Bishop and the Parish Priest to cook up own stories and circulate them without even once thinking whether it could be fake.

Thanks daijiworld. At last logical facts emerged. I was pretty clear when family members refused to pursue the case.

The church authorities tried their level best to salvage the respect of the priest and the church. I don't know if it is right or wrong. But feel very sad when I think of people including children insulting priests and the bishop. Probably, it would have been better if the facts were revealed to the faithful in the beginning itself. One thing is for sure: there is a perfect child in this world and every mother has it. May the Departed soul of Fr. Mahesh rest in eternal peace.

If what is published in this report based on police report is true, i feel the priest should have left priesthood and should have done what he wanted he do. In fact he has brought bad name to the community of priests like how many other priests have done in the post.
No one forces anyone to become or continue as a priest. But, unfortunately now a days many join the seminary and become priests to enjoy good life in contrast to the old priests who were so religious .

Thanks Daiji for your extensive study over this pathetic sad ending of Fr Mahesh.

Though the clergy in authority had exercised their role to the utmost satisfaction, the innocent parishioners who never expected some misdeeds by a so called hard working priest who underwent and couldn't resist the devilish temptations had finally given up his life.

We pray that the Divine power may intercede and give solace and may the departed enjoy his eternal bliss. To err is human but to forgive is Divine.

Hats off to Daijiworld for publication of this article which puts into rest many minds on this sensational case. It's sad but true state of affairs in some cases of our present day church. There was a time the community was poor and priests turned out to be holy and simple whom we used to accept as true representative of Christ.

Today the community is affluent and to a certain extent have compromised our moral standards in exchange for luxuries and comforts of life which ultimately results in these kind of incidents. Time we pray together for our clergy and religious .

Thanks DaijiWorld for pursuing this case, that had raised so many questions.

My opinion is that the conflict within Fr. Mahesh, was not resolved by the leadership of Catholic Church. His dilemma is too evident when he was asked to leave by SVD, and then again problems in Diocesan Seminary, both these instances taken together should have rang bells, and the counselors should have acted. He should have been encouraged to leave the priesthood, and promised support in lay world. Though well educated, he could not come to a final decision regarding his life.

Counsellors must have tried their best. The doctors and elders in the family, should have first identified the problem at a very early stage and got him professional/medical help. An article dated Oct 12th published by another media, it was said that “Family sources have revealed that Fr Mahesh was suffering from depression syndrome since his childhood. But the family members did not expect Fr Mahesh to take the extreme step to end his life at this age”. However, commrnt published in the same article was: “I am a close relative of Fr. Mahesh and I know him from his very childhood. He is my nephew .He is a dynamic person with full of enthusiasm from his childhood. He is never depressed. When he was a seminarian at St. Joseph’s Seminary, he was a frequent visitor to our house. After ordination he put his full soul and spirit in the schools where he worked. He was never in depression. We do not know the reason for his untimely demise and unexpected decision to end his life.”
    Contradictory statement and comment!
This incident taught us some lessons
    1. Religious and clergy : If you cannot live by your vows, please quit, live and let live. Lack of unity & support by the clergy was very evident, in all subsequent events. Unfortunately, some religious have also contributed in spreading false news without knowing the facts.
    2. Parents : Please accept the weakesses of your children, try to get professional help as and when required instead of trying to cover up their flaws.
    3. To us the laity : Misuse of Social media = damage similar to what we see in Corona virus.
REMEMBER : Our mighty God is much above your Whats App University.
FINALLY : A word of thanks to Daijiworld for doing a wonderful job as a responsible media house. (Needless to mention, there are other publishing houses trying to mislead readers with interviews, if’s and but’s and without disclosing any facts.)

A clergy should lead a simple life from forefront which should be role model to the society .

During our childhood days while staying in Jesuit priests hostel , we used to admire simple and prayerful life of SJ priests . Morning used to start by prayers and end of the day also used to close by prayer 🙏. In between even while having dinner or supper , used to start by prayer . This really helped us to live in a systematic life style

Now a days because of life style we cannot make out who is clergy man !

I appreciate the publication of the report.

So far as I am aware, since 2009, a bishop has SOME authority to defrock a priest. Some priests are just not fit to be in that role.

The real problem, however, is due to the mindset of the laypersons. They think that a priest is more holy/incorruptible than God.

People must accept that a priest is just performing a profession like any other.

I would have written more, but my comments on such matters are not published by the webmaster.

Can not agree anything more! People with vested interests conducted face book and whats App trials accusing Bishop and upright Parish Priests. They called them by names, ridiculed them to the best of their ability and so on! Their attempt to crucify and character assassination may haunt them if they have any conscience. Most of them were anti-priests just used the death to settle scores in a hurry. Hats off to Daiji for the unbiased report though it is bitter.

We can't blame the lay parishioners for keeping their trust and respecting the clergy and taking up the fight for justice. These are the teachings we have learnt from the church.

The mistake has happened from the clergy authority for keeping the matter closed with parishioners. The matter wouldn't have flared up so much if parishioners doubts were cleared at the start of the protest with lot of transparency than trying to defame someone so publicly after his death. Let us not triumph over the report. Shame on each one who was waiting to see this day and triumph over it. Inorder to prove someone innocent we can't triumph over others defamation . Also it is wrong to defame a person after his death when he cannot defend self. Case is still in Lords court.

Jacintha, Mumbai, you seem to be confused and upset with the facts.
What “trust and respect to clergy” by lay parishioners are you talking about? From November 2nd & many incidents after that we have seen how our “lay parishioners” (a mob to be specific) have "shown respect" to the clergy. Is that the way anybody fights for justice by defaming someone who THEY think is wrong? Please dont talk of “teachings we have learnt from the church”, leave it to the ones who live by it. It is Our Saud Mai and our Lord who has at last delivered justice, because there were some of us who sincerely prayed for justice.
Madam Jacintha, when police and courts have taken over, please understand that there is no other option for the "clergy authority” but to “keep the matter closed with parishioners". The flaring up was done by some in the name of "justice" to settle individual scores and worked to create doubt and confuse the innocent lay parishioners.
When SP NISHA tried to explain who listened to her?
When Parish Priest tried to explain was he allowed to speak?
When Bishop came to visit and may be address the parishioners, what welcome did he receive?
The SP, Bishop and PP separately said that the parents had requested not to go further,(as they very well knew where it would lead) but finally parents denied and brother issued a statement that they had not said any such thing. So it was they who opted to see this day, and all of us got to see justice in black and white! "Shame on each one who was waiting to see this day and triumph over it" Why do you say this, you too wanted justice, right ? When justice is laid on a platter and presented to you, instead of gracefully accepting, you say shame !! Injustice being continuously done to innocent clergy should have brought you SHAME. The dead person has left enough and more evidence my dear which is public property through RTI. Oh thank God, at last all are remembering the Lord and HIS court.

Let this be an eye opener, not just to Clergy, (which of late has had several scandals), but the laity should also be aware of the sheep in wolves clothing. Let us not take sadistic pleasure in condemning the misdeeds of Fr. Mahesh, he was after all a mortal, what the Clergy needs to analyse is that despite the over a decade of formation it takes to be a priest (ordained) what is it that makes them falliable ?
