Dharwad: Inflow of onions from Nasik brings down prices

Daijiworld Media Network - Dharwad (SP)

Dharwad, Dec 10: The local farmers, who were not bothered by onion imports from countries like Egypt and Turkey are now worried about the impact created by the supply of onions grown in Nasik and surrounding places of Maharashtra.

A number of farmers, who were cleaning the onions harvested by them after most of it was spoiled by heavy rain and flood, and were hoping to get good price at the market for it on account of deficit supply, are shocked by the sudden slump in onion prices.

The price of onions which was between Rs 10,000 and 15,000 per quintal last week, declined on Monday to Rs 8,000. Out of 654 quintals of onions received at the APMC market here on Monday, maximum rate offered was Rs 10,500. 606 quintals of onions was received from Gujarat but they managed price of only Rs 8,500 per quintal. Onion from Rajathan commanded price of Rs 8,000. Two loads of Egypt onions came to Hubballi, but were returned for want of demand.

Five loads of onions were received at Mangaluru market on Monday from Gujarat. This onion is bigger in size, and is of good quality, and hence has good demand. Rate however, has come down as compared to previous week, and prices offered were between Rs 95 to 130 per kilo. The government's action in bringing down maximum stock of onions retailers can hold from five to two tonnes also has impacted the prices.

Onion prices are incresed by bjp govt to help farmers as they were promised ache din by our chowkidar. BJP is farmer friendly and takes care of all the farmers. Those farmers who committed suicide were due to bad policy of Congress / BSP / Shiv Sena / NC/ TDP / CPI / CPM etc etc.

With massive imports along with the next crop getting ready, there will a glut in the Mkt!

Anticipating huge shortfall in produce, any wise person would have imported in advance!

People of Karnataka are intelegent enough to understand that voting bjp is more important than voting cong on temporary onion price or economy slow down. Otherwise existence if Hindus will at risk.

"Existence of Hindus at risk" when you wrote, I know you were not sincere, but you are writing according to present phrase brought out by BJP for political gain and getting votes from majority community. Almost all political parties are having Hindus in majority and they will not kill Hindus to bring about it's extinction. Hindus were there from time immemorial and will continue to be there till eternity. It is nonsense to say that they will extinct if BJP is not voted now.

You are writing, economy slow down is not important to India. But look at the figures in world wealth and religion.
Jews are holding 1.1% of world wealth, highest per capita wealth
Christians are holding 55%, 2nd highest per capita wealth
Other minor religions, communists and non believers holding 34%, 3rd highest per capita wealth
Muslims 5.8% and Hindus 3.8%. That shows majority Hindu nation's economy is not good. With the present Modi govt, it will surely go down. Because of their failure in economic front, BJP is trying to gain sympathy saying Hindus are in extinction.

Hoarding at its best...strike when the opportunity is right. Traits learnt from the Marwari, Baniyaa, Gujarati Rajasthani and many other business communities hell bent on seizing the most of the opportunity for their gains. I will not be surprised if some of the traders may have died due to a heart attack on hearing this drastically unexpected news. After all this happens only in India.

Looks like even the farmers were involved in hiding their stocks to benefit from fake short supply and increased prices. Since, onions are being imported to meet the local demand, the farmers now regret having lost the golden opportunity of disposing their produce when the onion prices were at its peak.
Some may even conclude that It's BJP sarkars effect in Karnataka !

It is always like that. Be it shares or real estate. We wait for better price even at the peak hoping to increase further. When decline starts no takers, ultimately it may settle down at lot lower level.
