Udupi, Oct 13: Mother Of Sorrows Church Udupi, for the consecutive fourth year, won the 16th diocese-level Konkani singing competition, organized by St John Evangelist Church ICYM Pangla. The event was held on Sunday, October 13.
St John The Evangelist Church Pangla and Holy Cross Church Byndoor won second and third runner-up positions respectively.
Ace singer Prajoth D'Sa was the chief guest for the valedictory programme. Addressing the gathering Prajoth said "Nine years ago I was also a participant for this competition. I appreciate ICYM Pangla unit for organizing this event. Every year they bring out something new. We have teams participating from far off places like Byndoor and Miyar. Every performance was the best. But always be careful while selecting the songs for singing. Second important thing is patience,”
“Patience is important to achieve greater heights in signing. Sometimes opportunities come on our way unexpectedly. All the singers should learn to play instruments which will help you to sing better. Also we have a boon and that is our church choir which helps a lot to improve our music sense. Winning is not important, but passion for music is" he added.
Fr.= Valerian Mendonca, parish priest Mother of Sorrows Church, on the occasion, said, "This day has been the best. There is the hard work of Pangala unit. Udupi diocese adores you for your work. Diocese of Udupi is rich in music. Every church has a choir along with instrumentalists playing keyboard and guitar. This competition is a stage to bring out these talents. In upcoming days, all the parishes of diocese of Udupi should participate in this competition. Konkani has rich culture. Pangala unit has been organizing this competition since 16 years in a great manner. I appreciate their work."
Tina D'souza welcomed the gathering Princia Noronha, secretary, proposed vote of thanks.
Prior to the competitions inaugural function was held. Fr Baptist Menezes, vicar general, diocese of Udupi, inaugurated the event. Addressing the gathering, he said “I have been part of this event for last 11 times. It is a great event. Today after many practices, you are going to perform here. Let the best win.”
Fr Ferdinand Gonsalves, parish priest St John Evangelist Church, on the occasion, said, “Listeners emotions wake up for a soulful song. Singing is language of heart. Singing has no barriers of language, caste, religion or anything else. This event gives a stage for the talented singers of our diocese. And this is continuing from last 16 years. This event gives importance to Konkani songs. This place is a natural beauty. Every morning and evening various types of birds are heard singing in this place,”
Fr. Ferdinand Gonsalves, Fr Valerian Mendonca, Fr Roshan D’Cunha, assistant director ICYM Victor Mendonca, convener, Youth Commission, Mark Vaz, vice president parish pastoral committee, Clara Mendoca, secretary Seema D’souza, Convener 18 commissions, Gibson Castelino, president ICYM Pangla Princia Noronha, secretary and others were present on the occasion.
Sanjay Rodrigues, Shilpa Cuthinho, Fr Jayaprakash Menezes, Raina Sequiera, Rony Crasta were the judges.
One minute silent prayer was offered for the departed soul of Fr Mahesh D'souza.
