Bantwal, Sep 11: A protest rally was held against completely damaged national highway from Melkar to B C Road-Mani Junction in the leadership of former minister B Ramanath Rai on Wednesday. Traffic was stopped for five minutes at Melkar Junction.

B Ramanath Rai said, “People are facing hardships due to the damaged road. It is condemnable that the governments at the centre and state and the concerned officials have remained indifferent,”

“BJP people are acting for votes. The highway has been damaged with potholes and innocent people are losing lives. The four-lane work on the highway has stopped halfway due to cold war between elected representatives and contractor. But it is blamed for delay in land acquisition. I will resign from politics if that is the reason for stopping the work,” he added.

“All the roads were kept in order when I was in power including widening of Melkar road and rural roads. But BJP elected representatives are sleeping now,” he said.

“It is the habit of BJP to fool people for votes. BJP had received publicity for the works undertaken during Congress term by writing to the Prime Minister. But nobody writes to him about the condition of this road. The current MP Nalin Kumar is unable to maintain the highway. Therefore, write to the Prime Minister for the repairs of the highway,” he demanded.

“Those who criticize Prime Minister are labelled as traitors. What the people who criticize Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Nehru should be called? BJP at the centre and the state should stop playing with the lives of people and should repair the roads completely. The government at the centre and the state is deaf, dumb and blind. Let them open their eyes soon,” he said.

A memorandum was submitted to the deputy commissioner through the tahsildar after the rally.

Padmashekar Jain, Chandraprakash Shetty, M S Mohammed, Manjula Madhava Mave, Sudarshan Jain, Chandrahas Karkera, Abbas Ali, Mayilappa Salian, Padmanabha Rai, Sudarshan Rai, Dhanalaxmi C Bangera, Sadashiva Bangera, Siddik Guddeyangadi, Chittaranjan Shetty, Lukman Kaikamba, Prashanth, Mohammed Nandarabettu, Mahesh, Parameshwara Moolya, Kanchalakshi, Venkappa Poojary, Vasu Poojary, Sharif Shantiangadi, JDS leader Mohammed Shafi, P A Rahim and Haroon Rashid were present.

Block Congress president Baby Kunder welcomed. Sudeep Kumar Mani compered the programme.

This is a good protest at least it is in the interest of we-the common people. Road condition is pathetic everywhere. The other day I happened to travel to Kasaragod, the condition of the road is very bad. Senior citizens and people with any medical conditions should avoid this road, better travel by train.

    Highway is under Central Government.
Since 2014 the Central Government was on tour and couldn't fulfil any developments.
The exclusive developments BJP government has fulfilled is to blame Congress from 2014 to as of now.

Not in support of any party. But one thing is the National Highways are built and maintained by Central. Honestly, it's not right to take sides in issues like this. The roads are used by common people for daily travel. They struggle and not these so-called politicians.

I just travelled to Bangalore last night on this road. Pathetic condition to say the least. Could have reduced the journey by at least an hour if the roads were good. But who cares. I won't be surprised if nothing is done till the next elections approach.
