Beltangady: Doing what they preach - Priests join hands in flood relief work

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Beltangady, Sep 11: The sermon that is given from the pulpit in the church regarding doing good unto our brethren became a reality when 15 priests of Beltangady deanery got together and toiled hard for a day to remove the mud that was fallen on a house that belongs to Sundar Gowda of Malvantige village of Beltangady taluk.

It is first of its kind in the diocese of Mangaluru where a group of Catholic priests ageing from 30 to 70 years got together for the noble cause of flood relief work. Beltangady taluk was the worst affected during the recent deluge. Though the parishes in the taluk had collected money and necessary items for relief, the priests of Beltangady deanery felt that it would be better if they reach out people through their action also.

This unique initiative of the priests was carried out under the leadership of Fr Bonaventure Nazareth, dean of the deanery, under the guidance of Fr Vinod Mascarenhas, Director of Vimukthi Social work Centre, Beltangady.

When the intention and mind which is pure for the service of humanity then religion, caste, region does not matter. This work of humanity is very much appreciated. But it is very sad to see some people connecting it to money, advantage, religion and other issues. Sick mentality of this people is a harm to humanity , we pray that God May enlighten them. Let us go beyond and out of our whatsapp status , useless comments and narrow mentality. I invite such people to go and be with the families of those flood affected areas and see the reality.

I alone would have done myself..no need such brigades. While intention is good people not over looking where and how they help keeping away religions aside. Did priests do not know about it. Is it not other people's home affected in this region. Always remember on humantarian ground no one ask caste religion..and stand to help.

please do not generalize...so many mothers kill their babies some work in the oldest profession so does it mean that your mother too is one like them...
The world is always made of good and bad people and you find them in the same profession ..good doctors -bad doctors, good teachers -bad teachers , good politicians- bad politicians etc etc

When the mother nature is sober & God's wrath calms down a bit, these Priests need to do a lot more social work:
    1. Regularly visit sick people & administer Sacraments to them
    2. Regularly visit Prisoners
    3. Identify "Sunday, Christmas & Easter" Catholics in their Parishes & Counsel them to bring back to the Church fold.
    4. Start De-addiction workshops for drunkards / alcoholics & try to save families.
    5. Spend Tithes on deserving poor families
    6. Visit families in Parishes & spend time with them. Don't sideline poor.
    God Bless
