Mumbai, Sep 12: Team India’s strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux, in his second stint with the Men in Blue, has revealed that the Bronco Test has now become a new benchmark in the squad’s fitness regime. The South African trainer spoke about the test in a video released on the official BCCI website.
Originally designed for rugby players to enhance aerobic and cardiovascular endurance, the Bronco Test sets markers at 0m, 20m, 40m and 60m. A player runs from 0m to 60m, back to 0m, to 40m, back to 0m, to 20m, and back again — covering 240m per set. Five continuous sets total 1,200m of relentless running. According to Wisden, Indian cricketers are expected to complete it under six minutes.
Explaining its significance, Roux said, “The run we did today is the Bronco run. It is not a new measurement. It has been around for years in other sporting codes. We introduced it in the team environment as both a training mechanism and a measurement tool. It gives us a clear picture of players’ aerobic fitness and whether we’re moving in the right direction.”
He also highlighted its adaptability, adding, “It is a field test, so we can do it anywhere in the world. As we travel, we can always use it. It also allows players to assess themselves.”
Reflecting on the demands of modern cricket, Roux said that workloads have risen sharply over the past two decades. His priority, he noted, is to ensure players stay fit and prolong their careers. “If you are physically prepared, you can play more seasons. What we implement helps minimise the risk of injury,” he said.
Roux, who previously worked with Team India in the early 2000s, described his comeback as both “familiar and exciting”. His first assignment this time was India’s tour of England, where Shubman Gill’s side fought back to level the series 2-2. “The players’ work ethic really impressed me. The fight we showed, I was honoured to be part of it,” he recalled.
Team India now gears up for their Asia Cup blockbuster clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on August 14.
